‘Inside Out 2’ Character Art Director Explains the Inspiration Behind Anxiety’s Design
Pixar Studios is set to return to theaters in a big way this year with the release of Inside Out 2.
The highly anticipated sequel to 2015’s Inside Out will see the return of Joy, Sadness, Anger, Disgust, and Fear as they help guide Riley through her biggest challenge yet — puberty.
The film will not only see Riley’s existing emotions face new challenges, but it will also introduce new emotions into the young girl’s mind.
Joining the original five emotions will be Anxiety, Embarrassment, Ennui, and Envy as Riley’s teenage mind gets increasingly complicated.
Introducing Anxiety
Ahead of Inside Out 2′s June 14 release, Pixar artist Keiko Murayama, who was charged with bringing Anxiety to life, stopped by Disneyland’s Pixar Place Hotel to share more about Riley’s new emotion.

Over a video of Muraymama drawing Riley’s newest emotion, the animator explained that character designer Deanna Marsigliese wanted Anxiety to be related to fear in her design, as the two emotions are intertwined.
While Fear has a very vertical look, anxiety is more horizontal. Still, both characters make big expressions with big eyes and big mouths and a penchant to be a bit dramatic.
Audiences will have a chance to familiarize themself with anxiety when Inside Out 2 hits theaters on June 14, 2024.
