‘Sky High’ Director Would Consider Making a Sequel, But He Wants Kevin Feige Involved
Long before the advent of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Disney dabbled in the superhero genre with Sky High.
The film was directed by Mike Mitchell and written by Kim Possible creators Bob Schooley and Mark McCorkle, along with Paul Hernandez.
Sky High followed the story of Will Stronghold (Michael Angarano), the son of two superhero parents (Kurt Russell and Kelly Preston).
Even though his own superpowers have not manifested yet, Will is enrolled at Sky High, a secret floating high school for future superheroes.
With the mixture of humor and reverence for the superhero genre, Sky High was a modest box-office success and would eventually develop a cult following.
Mike Mitchell Reveals Kevin Feige Was a ‘Sky High’ Fan
In a recent interview with ComicBook.com, Mitchell revealed that among Sky High’s biggest fans is Marvel President Kevin Feige.
“Here’s what it is. I know that Kevin Feige is a huge ‘Sky High’ fan. Right when it came out, he met with me and we talked about it. His whole team loved it because it was the first superhero comedy that was having fun with the genre. But, at the same time honoring it. And so, the trick is this: That was not made under Marvel. That was before they [Disney] bought Marvel.”
While Mitchell has been busy with Kung Fu Panda and Trolls, the director has given some thought to a Sky High sequel.
A ‘Sky High’ Sequel?
If the director had his way, the second film in the franchise would have seen Michael Angarano at another institution of higher learning called “Save U.” Based on the amount of time that has passed since the original film, that idea would have to be reworked. Still, Mitchell would be interested in making a second Sky High film under one condition.
“If we could pull Kevin into it. And, we could get Disney to…Disney’s so scared of Marvel,” he added. “Only Marvel can do superhero films. To which, I say, ‘Great!’ Let’s have Marvel do Sky High! That would be fun. So, I’m ready to go.”
While a Sky High sequel seems unlikely at this point, hope springs eternal. Either way, it is interesting to view Sky High and the tone that it struck through the prism of the MCU. In many ways, the film was a forerunner of what came next.
