Marvel Kept Kelsey Grammer’s Beast Return A Secret — Even From Teyonah Parris
Perhaps the most shocking moment in last year’s The Marvels didn’t occur until after the credits began to roll.
After the universe had been saved and Captain Marvel and Kamala Khan returned to Earth, Monica Rambeau awoke in an unfamiliar location. Laying in a medical bay, Rambeau found herself face to face with a woman who looked exactly like her late mother, Maria.
Then, the camera panned over to reveal Kelsey Grammer’s Beast was the doctor overseeing Rambeau’s recovery. As it turns out, Rambeau was not in Kansas anymore.
Kelsey Grammer’s MCU Debut
Grammer’s cameo in The Marvels not only marked his first time playing the character since 2014’s X-Men: Days of Future Past but also the first time that an X-Men had appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
As it turns out, it was not only fans who were shocked to see that the MCU was featuring the universe of the Fox X-Men films.
Teyonah Parris Didn’t Know
In a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, Teyonah Parris, who portrayed Monica Rambeau in the film, revealed that when she filmed the scene, Beast was simply a normal doctor. Parris didn’t even know that a cameo was a possibility. Needless to say, she was stunned when she saw the final product.
“I also went wild [seeing Beast at the end of The Marvels] cause I’m like, ‘Wait a minute! That’s not who I filmed with!’ And I had no clue until it aired … When we filmed it, it was an actor who was very kind, very nice, and he was dressed in a lab coat. He looked like a normal, regular doctor. No one said, ‘By the way, this is going to be a little surprise.’ I had zero clue. I found out with everyone else.”
With a secret as big as the arrival of the X-Men in the MCU, it is no surprise that Marvel wanted to keep Beast’s cameo a surprise. Still, it is surprising that even Parris wasn’t in on the secret.
The Marvels is now streaming on Disney+.
