Dave Bautista Is Done Playing Drax — But He Might Not Be Done With the MCU
Dave Bautista may be done playing Drax the Destroyer in the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, but that doesn’t mean he won’t be appearing in more superhero movies.
While speaking to Gizmodo on the press tour for Dune: Part Two, Bautista said that he would even be open to playing a different role within the MCU.
“When I said that I was done, I was really just done with my journey as Drax,” Bautista said. “I still have a relationship with Marvel. I’ve seen Kevin Feige again, Lou [D’Esposito] as recently as two weeks ago. And they know that I would be up for a role. I love the universe — the superhero universe, I love it. I’m a fan. So Marvel or DC, if they call, I would answer the phone. And if the role makes sense, I’d be all over it.”
Done With Drax
Bautista has previously made it clear that he will not be reprising his role as Drax, bemoaning the time it takes to get into makeup and asserting that he is too old for the role.
“It wasn’t all pleasant,” he said at the time. “It was hard playing that role. The makeup process was beating me down. And I just don’t know if I want Drax to be my legacy — it’s a silly performance, and I want to do more dramatic stuff.”
He has, however, previously hinted that he would be open to teaming up with his Guardians of the Galaxy cohort James Gunn in the DC Universe.
Bautista Wants More Dramatic Roles
As to what type of role he would like to play in future superhero films, Bautista has his eyes set on something a little more dramatic.
“I just would like the opportunity to do a bigger role, a different role,” he continued. “Maybe a deeper role. I’d love to have the opportunity to play, like, an ominous villain in the superhero universe. … I’m not done with it. But my journey with Drax is over.”
During an appearance on the Tonight Show last year, Bautista called Drax’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3. exit “perfect” and stated that any future appearance as Drax would tarnish that legacy.
“With Drax, I just got to end the perfect way,” he added. “And I would never sign up for another job as Drax just to get a paycheck … I won’t do it.”
