‘Shang-Chi’ Star Simu Liu Discusses His Possible Marvel Return

Although Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings was well received by critics and fans alike, Simu Liu has yet to reappear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

Following Liu’s debut as Shang-Chi in 2021, it seemed like the new Marvel hero was being set up to play a central role in the future of the MCU.

Since that time, however, both Liu and the other Shang-Chi characters have been markedly absent from any new Marvel releases.

In fact, looking back at the pandemic era, both Shang-Chi and Eternals feel cast aside by Marvel as the studio continues to lay out its Multiversal Saga.

When Will Shang-Chi Return?

Outside of Shang-Chi 2, which was rumored to be in production following the first film’s success, the most likely place we could see Liu reprise his MCU role would be Avengers 5.

Formally known as Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, the next Avengers film will seemingly bring together a new, younger iteration of the iconic Marvel team.

In an interview with Comic Book, however, Liu admitted that he was unsure when he would be returning to the MCU.

“Oh man, I don’t know to be honest. I mean, those things are so above my pay grade,” he explained.

“I just wanna continue to be a fan of it. You know, when I get a call of like, ‘Hey, this is what you’re in and this is where you’re going to show up. And, this is when you’re going to be need to be blacked out for.’ That’s kind of generally what tends to happen.”

Praise For Destin Daniel Cretton

While we may not know much about Shang-Chi 2, we know that the film will be directed by Shang-Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton. In his interview, Liu was unwavering in his support of the director.

“But, you know Destin is such a special filmmaker and we’re very happy to have him on the sequel. So, he’ll be working on that and we’re really excited to see what he comes up with. I think he’s going to do a brilliant job.”

While it doesn’t sound like Shang-Chi 2 will hit theaters anytime soon, the project is still seemingly alive.

Hopefully, we will see Liu reprise his role as the young Marvel hero sooner rather than later.
