Florida Theme Park Injury Reports for Fourth Quarter 2023
Florida’s government just released its quarterly theme park injuries report.
Thankfully, we’re not discussing anything serious this time.
Still, let’s look at all the theme park incidents in Central Florida this past quarter.
About the Incidents Report
Once per quarter, the state of Florida releases its theme park incidents report.
The Florida Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services publishes this report, which you can find on the official website.
This most recent report covers the most crowded time on the annual calendar, Halloween through New Year’s.
As such, that’s the time when the largest volume of guests visits the parks. Incidents often arise.
These reports have taken on greater significance lately, with Disney currently suing Florida’s state government and vice versa.
While the Florida Department of Transportation now handles monorail inspections, any such incidents won’t appear on these reports.
After all, that’s a different governmental department.
So, from our perspective, nothing has changed in the many years we’ve covered these reports.
Let’s Talk about the Fourth Quarter 2023 Incidents
First, let me say that we take these posts at face value.
Sometimes, perhaps we shouldn’t. As a reminder, Universal Studios once settled a high-profile lawsuit.
In the allegation, a man claimed that a water park attraction caused him paralysis.
On the injuries report for that quarter, Universal listed the incident as “back pain.” So, yeah.
Sometimes, we don’t learn the whole truth until later.
Thankfully, this quarter’s incidents appear relatively calm.
Walt Disney World lists seven incidents in three months, which is equates to a couple of issues per month.
Given the millions of people who visit the parks each month, that’s a shockingly low total.
This quarter’s incidents include:
- A 73-year-old feeling lightheaded after riding Pirates of the Caribbean
- A 70-year-old experiencing chest pains after riding Toy Story Mania!
- A 41-year-old fainting after riding Test Track
- A 66-year-old suffering chest pains after riding Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind
- A 75-year-old fainting after riding Frozen Ever After
- A 59-year-old feeling lightheaded after riding Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith
- A 73-year-old experiencing chest pains after riding Big Thunder Mountain Railroad
At Universal Orlando Resort, park officials only listed one incident.
- A 59-year-old experienced motion sickness after riding The Incredible Hulk Coaster
Final Thoughts
Notably, SeaWorld Orlando, Busch Garden Tampa Bay, and LEGOLAND Florida all went the full quarter without any incidents.
Overall, based on the information we have, this was a nice, calm quarter for Central Florida theme parks.
In calendar 2023, Disney reported a total of 23 incidents, breaking down as four in Q1, six in Q2, six in Q3, and seven in Q4.
So, yes, two incidents a month sounds about right.
