James Gunn Initially Didn’t Think That Chris Pratt Would Make a Good Star-Lord
While James Gunn has jumped ship and will head DC Studios going forward, for Marvel fans, he will always be the man who brought us the Guardians of the Galaxy.
Under Gunn’s watchful eye, Marvel Studios was able to turn one of its lesser-known superhero teams into a bonafide tentpole franchise.
Although these days, Gunn is focused more on Superman than Iron Man, he still takes time to interact with Marvel fans and give them a peek behind the curtain.
Gunn Was Skeptical of Chris Pratt
Recently on Threads, Gunn was asked if there was ever a time that he was sure an actor would not fit the role they were auditioning for, only to be blown away by their audition.
Interestingly, Gunn named Chris Pratt as the actor who had fit that bill. He also noted that it has happened a few other times as well.
Pratt, of course, originated the role of Guardians’ leader Peter Quill/Star-Lord in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1, before reprising his role in both of the film’s sequels and a holiday special. Additionally, he appeared in Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, and Thor: Love and Thunder.
Pratt Took the Role and Ran With It
At the time that Pratt was cast as Peter Quill, he was best known for playing the goofy Andy Dwyer on Parks and Recreation.
In the end, however, Gunn gave Pratt the Guardians role, and the rest, as they say, is history. The actor would eventually get rave reviews for his performance in the Guardians films and become a full-fledged action star.
