Marvel Studios Receives First-Ever Razzie Nominations
For the first time in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), a Marvel Studios film has been nominated for the dreaded Razzie Awards.
2023 was far from a banner year for Marvel, with Secret Invasion delivering poor reviews on Disney+ and The Marvels becoming the lowest-grossing film in MCU history.
Still, it was February’s Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantuamania that earned Marvel their first Razzie nomination.
Quantumania Is Nominated For Three Razzies
In fact, in total, the film is up for three Razzie Awards. Michael Douglas and Bill Murray “earned” nominations in the “Worst Supporting Actor” category, while Peyton Reed “earned” a nomination for “Worst Director.”
Finally, Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania was included in the “Worst Prequel, Remake Rip-Off, or Sequel” category, where it was joined by fellow Disney release Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.
While other Marvel films have received Razzie nominations, including Sony Pictures’ Morbius and 20th Century Fox’s Fantastic Four, this is the first time that a Marvel Studios film has received a nod.
A Rough Year For Marvel
The third entry in the Ant-Man franchise, Quantumania, was released on February 17, 2023.
The film served as the formal introduction of Jonathan Majors’ Kang in MCU and ushered in Marvel Studio’s Phase V.
While Marvel reportedly had high expectations for the film, Quantumania received poor reviews from both critics and fans. Although it delivered a strong opening weekend, the film’s box office prospects quickly dropped off.
Marvel will look to rebound in 2024 by slowing down its release schedule. This year, Deadpool 3 will be the studio’s only release.
