Robert Downey Jr. Says Some Of His “Best Acting” Was Done in the MCU
Robert Downey Jr. took some time to reflect back on his career during a recent interview on Robe Lowe’s Literally! podcast.
When looking back at his time in the MCU, Downey believes that he did some of his best acting, even if his performance was discounted because of the film’s genre.
Reflecting On ‘Dolittle’
Downey famously exited the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2019. To launch his next act, the actor starred in 2020’s Dolittle, which was critically panned and bombed at the box office.
“I felt so exposed after being in the cocoon of Marvel where I think I did some of the best work I will ever do, but it went a little bit unnoticed because of the genre,” said Downey. It “just didn’t work.”
While Dolittle was certainly a setback for the Hollywood star, Downey believes it helped prepare him for what would come next.
“I did myself a favor, because the rug was pulled so definitively out from underneath me and all the things that I was leaning on as opposed to what my understanding of confidence and security was, boy did they evaporate. And it rendered me teachable.”
Redemption With ‘Oppenheimer’
What came next for Downey was a chance to appear in Christopher Nolan’s blockbuster Oppenheimer. Not only was the film one of 2023’s great success stories, but it also could garner Downey Jr. an Oscar nomination.
“And the crazy thing is they say when the student is ready, the [Christopher] Nolan will come,” he added. “I mean, the teacher will come. And that’s what happened.”
