‘Prop Culture’ Host Dan Lanigan Speaks Out After Show’s Removal
Prop Culture host Dan Lanigan is speaking out after the fan-favorite documentary was unexpectedly removed from Disney+ last year.
For those who don’t know, Prop Culture examined some of Disney’s most beloved films through the props that helped bring them to life.
Throughout the series, host Dan Lanigan would also reunite iconic props with the men and women who helped create them decades ago.
Among the films covered in the series were Mary Poppins, Tron, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Pirates of the Caribbean, Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, The Chronicles of Narnia, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, and The Muppet Movie.
‘Prop Culture’ Was Removed Last May
As with many Disney+ original series, Prop Culture was removed from the streaming service last May as part of a shift in Disney’s wider streaming strategy.
By removing the original content from Disney+, Disney was theoretically able to avoid paying residuals while also taking a tax write-off.
Dan Lanigan Speaks Out
Interstingly, in a Movie Props Facebook group, Dan Lanigan discussed the removal of Prop Culture and revealed that the show was relatively cheap for Disney to keep streaming.
“Prop Culture didn’t have any residual requirements, outside of the short film clips and some of the music used. [It] was a very inexpensive show to keep on Disney+ (relatively speaking) compared to anything else out there, except for some documentary or game show style shows.” Lanigan explained.
In the end, Lanigan was as baffled by Disney’s decision to remove Prop Culture as fans were.
“I still don’t understand why they removed it. It was a great promotion for their other films,” he added.
Hopefully, like other removed Disney+ series, Prop Culture will eventually find a new streaming home.
