‘Inside Out 2’ Director: “We Wouldn’t Do Another Movie Unless We Knew We had a Good Story to Tell”
Despite Bob Iger’s musing that Disney was perhaps making too many sequels, the next Pixar film to hit theaters will be Inside Out 2.
The highly-anticipated sequel to 2015’s Inside Out will take guests back into the mind of Riley, who is now a teenager and beginning to feel all kinds of new emotions.
In addition to returning to the original five emotions- Joy, Sadness, Anger, Disgust, and Fear, the film will introduce Anxiety, Embarrassment, Ennui, and Envy, as Riley’s teenage mind gets increasingly complicated.
Iger’s Criteria For New Sequels
When finally admitting that Disney has made too many sequels in the past, Iger noted that going forward, there would need to be a reason “beyond commerce” to continue a franchise.
“It doesn’t mean we’re not going to continue to make them,” Iger added. “We’re making a number of them now right as a matter of fact. But we will only greenlight a sequel if we believe the story that the creators want to tell is worth telling.”
Mann Explains Why ‘Inside Out 2’ Will Work
In a recent interview with Total Film, Inside Out 2 director Kelsey Mann echoed Iger’s comments and reassured fans that the upcoming sequel has a story to tell.
The team behind the film “wouldn’t do another movie unless we knew we had a good story to tell,” she said.
While we don’t know everything Inside Out will have in store for audiences, we know that the film will introduce new emotions as Riley’s teenage mind gets increasingly complicated.
“The really good sequels are the ones that don’t just repeat the last film,” Mann added, teasing that the film may have some surprises in store for audiences.
Inside Out 2 will hit theaters on June 14, 2024.
