Eric Martin Compares Loki’s Ending to Atlas
Season 2 of Loki ended with the former God of Mischief sacrificing his happiness to fulfill his glorious purpose.
Assuming the weight of the multiverse on his shoulders, Loki finds himself alone on a throne at the end of time.
According to Loki season 2 head writer Eric Martin, the conclusion of Loki’s story was meant to be up for interpretation. One thing is clear, however, the former narcissistic Asgardian has put his own happiness aside for his friends.
“The big idea was taking Loki from a lowercase-g god, to a capital-G God, powering him up to that place where he gets his throne—but it’s not a throne he wants anymore. This is a duty. He’s doing this so everyone else can have their lives. He’s giving up the thing that he wants most so that everyone else can have their free will… We wanted to power up his abilities, but also his wisdom and knowledge.”
Loki’s Ending Was Meant to Be Ambiguous
The final shot of Loki on his throne shows the newly christened God of Stories holding the multiverse together, alone. While Loki can look in on the happy endings that his friends have received, he is consumed by his new burden.
According to Martin, the final state of Loki was “meant to be ambiguous.”
“I leave that up to interpretation. That final image is meant to be ambiguous. So I’ll let people make up their own minds there. If you look into mythology, someone like Atlas is an interesting person to look at with that.”
Comparisons To Atlas
In Greek mythology, Atlas is tasked with holding up the heavens for all eternity. It is both an overwhelming burden and a position of significance. Loki assumes a similarly daunting job in his new role as the God of Stories.
While Tom Hiddleston has publically stated that season 2 of Loki completed his character’s journey, with Marvel timelines set to collide in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars, his unique position at the epicenter of time would seemingly be important.
Hopefully, we have not seen the last of Loki, but if we have, the character received one of the great endings in Marvel history.
