Is Tom Hiddleston Done Playing Loki?
Of all the characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, no one has gone through more character development than Loki.
Tom Hiddleston’s God of Mischief originally debuted in 2011’s Thor as a clear-cut villain. As his relationship with his brother continued to develop, however, Loki was seemingly redeemed in Thor: Ragnarok, finally becoming the hero that Thor always hoped he would be.
It was Loki’s redemption in Ragnarok that made his death in Avengers: Endgame all the more moving.
As any comic book fan knows, death is not always final in the world of Marvel.
Hiddleston returned to his iconic role for the Disney+ series Loki, which saw a variant of the titular character turn from a self-centered would-be-tyrant to full full-fledged hero who eventually comes to accept his “glorious purpose.”
“It’s Been a Journey”
With Loki season 2 now in the history books, the God of Mischief’s story has reached a satisfying conclusion. So, is Hiddleston done with the MCU?
During a recent interview with Jimmy Fallon, Hiddleston reflected on the end of Loki and sounded a lot like a man who is walking away from Marvel.
“I will say this, it all comes full circle,” he said. “It’s the conclusion to Seasons 1 and 2, and it’s also the conclusion to six films and 12 episodes and 14 years of my life. 14 years. I was 29 when I was cast, I’m 42 now. It’s been a journey.”
‘Loki’ Producer Had Teased a Thor Reunion
At the beginning of Loki season 2, executive producer Kevin Wright discussed Loki’s future and even teased a possible reunion with Thor.
“I think the the sun shining on Loki and Thor once again has always been the priority of the story we’re telling. But for that meeting to really be fulfilling, we have to get Loki to a certain place emotionally. I think that’s been the goal of these two seasons,” he said.
Now that the dust has settled, however, a reunion doesn’t seem to be in the cards. Loki has seemingly finished his story and no one can blame Hiddleston for walking away. After six films and 13 episodes of television, Hiddleston has given more than a decade of his life to Loki, and now it seems, the time has come to say goodbye.
