The Jonathan Majors Domestic Violence Trial Finally Gets Underway
The first day in the Jonathan Majors domestic violence trial was an eventful one, as the Loki star appeared before Judge Michael Gaffey in a Manhattan courtroom.
From the bench, Judge Gaffey allowed Majors’ lawyers to argue for keeping a piece of evidence currently under seal out of the case permanently, from behind closed doors.
“We believe that the disclosure on this one limited issue would taint the jury pool beyond repair,” Majors’ lawyers argued.
The judge ruled that the evidence in question is “likely to be prejudicial and inflammatory” and that public disclosure of the information at this time would harm Majors’ ability to field an impartial jury and receive a fair trial.
Deadline has reported that the sealed evidence contains information about “potential past incidents” involving the actor.
The Jury Pool Was Sworn In
Outside of the ruling on the sealed evidence, the most significant outcome of the first day of the trial was the introduction of the 40 jury pool members.
The group was sworn in, told Majors’ name for the first time, and instructed not to discuss, research, or watch media coverage of the case.
“You can’t Google, FaceTime, Twitter — which I guess is now called X,” Gaffey quipped. “You can’t do any Internet searches, social media searches, absolutely anything you can think of that I haven’t mentioned … you cannot do.”
The Trial is Finally Underway
Majors was initially arrested on March 25 after an alleged domestic dispute with his then-girlfriend Grace Jabbari.
At the time of the arrest, Jabbari told officers she was assaulted after an altercation in a taxi.
After NYPD police arrived, Jabbari was taken to the hospital with bruising, lacerations, swelling, and a broken finger.
Majors has since pled not guilty to all charges, and his lawyers have argued that he was the victim.
Majors’ lawyer has called the arrest and subsequent trial a “witch hunt” that has been fueled by racism.
Meanwhile, the DA’s office has stated that they “look forward to presenting the full facts and evidence at trial.”
