Five Tips for GREAT Disney Character Interactions
Be honest. Are you a “Disney Adult”? Do you save all year to fly to Orlando for a week? Is Walt Disney your idol?
On the other hand, do you feel choked up by awkwardness when you spot beloved characters? Particularly for childfree or introverted adults, meeting characters can be more nerve-wracking than whimsical.

Granted, all characters aren’t created equally, and some are better at interacting with guests than others. Nevertheless, I believe meeting characters can be just as thrilling as the front seat of Space Mountain.
Check out the tips below to make the most out of your photo ops!
Book a Character Dining Experience
I love meeting characters, but I rarely get in line for them. If you also feel awkward queuing up to see Goofy, book a character dining meal instead.
These meals include a set of characters (usually four) who stop by your table for photos, hugs, autographs, etc. Already, this process eliminates lines and the act of approaching someone.

If you’re concerned about character meals being a kids-only experience, don’t. My husband and I have done several and it’s been a blast every time.
No one wants to be surprised mid-bite, so just keep your eyes peeled and phone ready to snap the perfect character selfie. You won’t regret this magical meal.

Stick with Who You Know
Successful character interactions are rooted in nostalgia. In other words, if you don’t know/care who a character is, don’t go out of your way to meet them.
Honestly, the moment will be lost on you, and you’ll be out of the loop for inside jokes. Characters and their Attendants love riffing off guests. So, it may be awkward if you don’t get the movie reference.
Avoid this by seeking out characters you remember. I’ve met Max Goof from A Goofy Movie (1995) at least four times and it still warms my 90s kid heart.
There is a character for everyone. Just ask my father who still gets bashful talking to Mary Poppins.
Wear a Great Outfit
Have you ever worn your favorite band’s t-shirt to their concert? The same principle applies here!
If your heart is set on meeting someone, plan an outfit or Disneybound ensemble that features them.
For example, my dad loves Donald Duck. So, when meeting him, he always wears his favorite Donald Duck shirt. (This has gotten priceless reactions.)
Other examples include:
Wearing a tiara to a princess character meal
Wear a classic Goofy hat to meet him
Don your favorite Sith robe visiting Lord Vader
All it takes is a little creativity to surprise and amuse a character. And we all know, better interactions make for better pictures!
Ask the Right Questions
Characters are trained to break the ice with guests, but they also appreciate silly (and appropriate) questions. Have some “in world” questions ready.
Let me explain. Character performers are trained to know specific details about their movie/show/franchise.

Characters are only supposed to exist in their universe, so don’t talk to them about Harry Potter or other non-Disney IPs. Ask them fun questions that make sense in their bubble.
Some conversation-starters could include:
“Ariel! How did you get your voice back?”
“Hi, Peter Pan. What happy thought makes you fly?”
“It’s so nice to meet you Anastasia and Drizella. Do you have any beauty tips for me?”
“Hey, Minnie! Do you like my new mouse ears? I bought them to match you!”
“Hey there Princess Tiana. What’s the secret to your delicious gumbo?”
Granted, it’s easier to ask questions to “face” (or non-mascot/fur) characters, but don’t underestimate the improv skills of these performers. I’ve had entire conversations with Mickey, all done through miming.
Be Playful
Let me be clear, be playful within reason. No one wants to be like that lady who went viral after meeting Gaston.
Be courteous, be respectful, and only give hugs when they’re offered. (I understand the excitement of meeting a character but keep it together guys.)

That being said, the more fun you have meeting a character, the better. Donning your favorite Mickey shirt and asking Jack Sparrow a clever question is great, but let the performers join in on the fun.
I’ve had Daisy Duck teach me ballet and Peter Pan take my hand to skip through Fantasyland. These moments are so magical and special.
Every photo op won’t be like that, but the more relaxed and sillier you are, the more likely it is.

Meeting characters can be one of the best parts of your trip. The stuffiest adults can’t help but smile at Winnie the Pooh.
