With ABC’s Future Unclear Disney Plots New York Studio Relocation
Pretty soon, Robin Roberts, George Stephanopoulos, and Michael Strahan will be greeting America from a new home.
As part of The Walt Disney Company’s plan to move all of its New York properties to a new building in Hudson Square, Good Morning America will join Live with Kelly and Mark in leaving behind its well-known studio.
While the move isn’t scheduled to take place until 2025, staffers are already questioning how the move might affect the program moving forward.
A Strategic Decision
In the hyper-competitive world of news, however, Disney believes that the ABC programs will be helped by their new local.
“‘Good Morning America’ is defined by the strength of our team in front of and behind the camera, quality of our reporting, and the long, trusted relationship with our viewers,” ABC News said in a statement. “Moving all ABC News teams to our new state-of-the-art building was a strategic decision that will allow for more collaboration and innovation.”
GMA’s Times Square studio has allowed the ABC program to compete with NBC’s Today for the heart of the city.
While Good Morning America has topped Today in overall viewers for several years, the NBC program has maintained its lead in the 25 to 54 demographic.
A Sign Disney Plans To Keep ABC?
Some observers also see the move to the new Disney building as a good sign for ABC’s future with the company.
With Disney CEO Bob Iger admitting that linear television “may not be core” to the company’s future, speculation has run rampant that Disney could sell ABC.
For now, at least, it appears as if ABC Is still very much a part of Disney’s future.
