While Disney Battles DeSantis, Universal Gets Its Own Special District
As Walt Disney World continues to battle Florida Governor Ron DeSantis in court over the dissolution of the Reedy Creek Improvement District, rival Universal has scored a new special district of their own.
Orange County commissioners unanimously approved a plan to establish a special taxing district called the Shingle Creek Transit and Utility Community Development District that will encompass Universal’s under-construction Epic Universe park, as well as a possible SunRail station.
Universal’s New Special District
The plan establishes an independent local government that will handle construction, infrastructure improvements, and financing. It will also govern the 719 acres of property that run between Sand Lake Road and State Road 528.
Notably, the district will also be involved in the planning of a SunRail line that will bring visitors from the Orlando International Airport to the Orange Country Convention Center. The new district will also be charged with the station’s maintenance.
A Boon For Orlando Transporation?
Universal Orlando leaders have stated the creation of the new special district will be beneficial in enhancing transportation in the area.
According to Orlando’s RIght Rail Coalition, which Universal is a part of, the new SunRail station will give additional transit options for almost 100,000 workers. When Epic Universe opens, the station will also benefit Universal employees.
“We want to fulfill the commitments that we’ve made to this board, to be part of these solutions and advance key county priorities,” said John Sprouls, chief administrative officer of Universal Destination and Experiences.
Universal’s New Special District Has No Residents
Under the new agreement, Universal says that it will support the operation and maintenance of the rail station without costing Orange County taxpayers.
Unlike the former Reedy Creek Improvement District, the new Shingle Creek Transit and Utility Community Development District will not have any residents. Additionally, there will only be two landowners, including Universal itself.
