R.L. Stine Was “Looking Over the Shoulder” of New ‘Goosebumps’ Series Producers
If you grew up in the 1990s, you are undoubtedly familiar with R.L. Stine’s Goosebumps books.
The Scholastic series has been chilling and thrilling readers for over 30 years, and now, Disney is bringing the franchise to steaming.
A new 10-part Goosebumps series is set to premiere on Disney+ and Hulu on October 13, just in time for Halloween.
The new series will follow five high schoolers who begin to investigate the mysterious death of a teen named Harold Biddle three decades earlier. Along the way, they explore the house where he died and begin to uncover secrets that tie their parents to Harold’s death.
Taking Inspiration From The Series
According to executive producers Pavun Shetty and Conor Welch, the new series draws on five of the popular Goosebumps bucks including Say Cheese and Die!, Night of the Living Dummy, The Haunted Mask, Go Eat Worms! and The Cuckoo Clock of Doom.
Those books were chosen as they “really tapped into the emotional story that the characters were going into at that moment,” Shetty said.
For the executive producers, getting the opportunity to bring Goosebumps to the small screen was extra special as they had grown up reading the books.
“I had an older sister … and she had a lot of [Goosebumps] books. So I used to sneak into a room and steal them and read them on my own,” he explained. “I think the feeling of the books that I got was that you are reading something a little bit too old for you that you shouldn’t be a part of and that was part of the thrill … That was the dynamic we took into developing the series.”
R.L. Stine’s Involvement
Part of the challenge for the show’s creators was finding the right mix of humor and horror in the series.
“Even R.L. Stine himself has said that he endeavored to write scary Stephen King-like books, but pepper in a lot of humor and so that was a North Star for us,” Welch said.
Speaking of of Stine, fans don’t have to worry, the Goosebumps author was involved in making the new series.
“He read scripts, he watched cuts. We got an email from him saying he loved the first episode,” Shetty said of Stine’s involvement. “He was always looking over our shoulder in a good way.”
“We wouldn’t have done the show without his blessing.”
Goosebumps will stream on Disney+ and Hulu beginning October 13.
