Marvel’s ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ Is Undergoing a Major Overhaul
Disney’s attempt to bring Charlie Cox’s Daredevil squarely into the Marvel Cinematic Universe has not gone as smoothly as planned.
Once upon a time, there were two adjacent Marvel timeliness being developed at the same time.
While the mainline MCU saw the formation of the Avengers, the age of Ultron, and the rise of Thanos, over on Netflix, Marvel’s “street-level” heroes were creating an interconnected world of their own.
Shows like Daredevil, Punisher, Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage, existed nominally in the same universe as their Avengers brethren; however, their world was darker, grittier, and aired on Netflix.
While the Marvel Netflix universe was widely popular in its own right, Marvel Studios’ foray into streaming with WandaVision in 2019 spelled the end for Daredevil and his friends. Or so we thought.
The Netflix Heroes Enter The MCU
Perhaps due to the popularity of the Netflix series, Marvel began to reintroduce some of the “street-level” characters into the mainline MCU.
Charlie Cox was the first to reprise his role, appearing as Matt Murdock in Spiderman: No Way Home.
Hawkeye then saw the reintroduction of Vincent D’Orfanio’s Kingpin, one of Daredevil’s primary antagonists into the MCU.
This was followed by Cox’s full-fledged return as Matt Murdock’s Daredevil persona in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law.
Daredevil: Born Again
With fans understandably thrilled to see the Netflix Marvel characters making their way into the mainline MCU, Marvel got set for a full-blown relaunch of its popular heroes in the form of Daredevil: Born Again.
The Daredevil reboot will see Cox, D’onofrio, and Jon Bernthal, who plays Punisher in the Netflix Marvel universe, reprise their role.
With a first season of 18 episodes, Daredevil: Born Again was initially supposed to premiere in 2023.
A Series of Delays
Production on the show has not gone smoothly, however, and after initially being delayed until 2024, Daredevil: Born Again was removed from Disney’s release schedule altogether following the onset of the SAG-AFTRA strike.
Now, according to Variety, Daredevil: Born Again is undergoing a major overhaul.
Major Changes Are Coming
The series has parted ways with head writers Chris Ord and Matt Corman and is currently seeking new writers to take the show in a different direction.
According to insiders, less than half of the series’ 18 episodes were shot prior to the beginning of the SAG-AFTRA strike, and Marvel has also released the directors for the remaining episodes of the season.
While some elements of the already shot material will be used going forward, other elements will be scrapped as the show heads in a new creative direction.
Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige reportedly watched the episodes that had been finished and decided that the project wasn’t working.
While the studio may have plans to change the direction of Dardevil: Born Again, with the actors on strike, there is little they can currently do.
Hopefully, the series will be salvaged, and Charlie Cox’s Daredevil will get the spotlight he so richly deserves.
Until then, all we can do is wait.
