With A Deal In Sight the WGA and Studio Execs Will Meet Saturday
The Writers Guild of America (WGA) and Hollywood studios are moving closer to an agreement that would end a nearly five-month strike.
A third straight day of negotiations ended without a deal yesterday, but both sides seem to be closing in on a tentative deal.
The sides will meet again on Saturday. The immedicay of the meeting seems to indicate the urgency that everyone involved feels to complete the deal.
Friday’s Successful Negotiations
The deadlock between the WGA and studios seems to have been loosened by the involvement of four senior studio executives- Disney CEO Bob Iger, Warner Bros. Discovery’s David Zaslav, NBCUniversal’s Donna Langley, and Netflix’s Ted Sarandos.
Negotiations kicked off Friday at 11 a.m. PT and continued until 8:30 p.m. According to sources from both sides of the negotiation, movement towards a deal was finally made in the final hours of the negotiating session.
After unproductive negotiations on Thursday, the WGA asked its members to man the picket line on Friday to demonstrate the guild’s resolve.
The WGA Thanks Its Members
Following Friday’s more successful negotiations, the WGA sent a short message to members, thanking them for responding to their call, and confirming that negotiations would continue on Saturday.
“The WGA and AMPTP met for bargaining on Friday and will meet again on Saturday. Thank you for the wonderful show of support on the picket lines today! It means so much to us as we continue to work toward a deal that writers deserve,” WGA leaders wrote.
A New Compensation Metric
According to sources, a new “success-based residual” will be included in the WGA contract. This would give writers residuals from streaming.
The new compensation metric would pay writers, at least in part, by whether or not a given title is watched by a pre-determined percentage of a streamer’s total number of subscribers.
Hopefully, a new deal will be reached soon, and the strike will end before it enters its fifth month.
