This Day in Disney History- September 20
Welcome back to our magical foray through the history of The Walt Disney Company. Today we are looking at the events on this day in Disney history- September 20.
September 20th was a slower day in Disney history, but it still featured the debut of a Magic Kingdom parade, the end of an Epcot firework show, and the opening of a new Walt Disney World Restaurant. So, let’s get started!
Alice’s Tiny Pony Released (1925)
On this day in 1925, the Alice Comedy Alice’s Tiny Pony was released.
In the short, Alice and her cat Julius are driving a train carrying a large payroll when it is attacked by the villainous Pete the Bear and his gang.
Alice’s Monkey Business Released (1926)
On this day in 1926, Alice’s Monkey Business was released.
The short, Alice and Julius are brought into the court of the King Lion while big game hunting.
Window Cleaners Released (1940)
On this day in 1940, the Donald Duck cartoon Window Cleaners was released.
In short, Donald and Pluto are window cleaners on the side of a skyscraper.
Lighthouse Keeping Released (1946)
On this day in 1946, the Donald Duck short Lighthouse Keeping was released.
In the short, Donald attempts to keep his lighthouse lit.
We the People All-America Parade Debuts (1987)
On this day in 1987, the We the People All-America Parade debuted at the Magic Kingdom.
The new parade featured Mickey and Minnie in colonial attire.
IllumiNations Ends (1996)
On this day in 1996, IllumiNations ended its run at Epcot.
The nighttime fireworks show had been running since 1988, and would eventually be replaced by IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth in 1999.
Spirited Away Released (2001)
On this day in 2001, Spirited Away was released in the United States.
The film was written and directed by famed animator Hayao Miyazaki.
Disney Agrees To Avatar Deal (2011)
On this day in 2011, Disney announced that it had reached an agreement with James Cameron’s Lightstorm Entertainment and Fox Filmed Entertainment to bring the world of Avatar to the Disney Parks.
Cameron and Avatar producer Jon Landau would work side-by-side with Imagineering to create Pandora: The World of Avatar at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.
The land would eventually open on May 27, 2017.
Spooky Buddies Released (2011)
Also on this day in 2011, Spooky Buddies was released direct-to-DVD.
The fifth installment in the Buddies franchise, the film found the team having a Halloween adventure.
Space 220 Opens (2021)
Finally, on this day in 2021, Space 220 opened in EPCOT.
The Grand Opening event was attended by Disney and Patina Restaurant Group executives, as well as Mickey and Minnie Mouse.
