This Day in Disney History- September 16
Welcome back to our magical foray through the history of The Walt Disney Company. Today we are looking at the events on this day in Disney history- September 16.
September 16th was a slower day in Disney history, but it still featured the opening of a Disney-MGM Studios attraction, a new Walt Disney World hotel, and the release of a new Disney animated series. So, let’s get started!
The Pied Piper Released (1933)
On this day in 1933, the Silly Symphony The Pied Piper was released.
The show was based on the classic tale of a mysterious piper who rids the town of its rat infestation with music.
Canal Boats of the World Close (1955)
On this day in 1955, DIsneyland’s Canal Boats of the World closed.
The attraction had only operated for two months, and would shortly be revamped and renamed the Storyland Canal Boats.
Restaurant el Marrakesh Opens (1984)
On this day in 1984, the Restaurant el Marrakesh opened in the Morocco pavilion.
Muppets on Location Opens (1991)
On this day in 1991, Muppets on Location opened in the Disney-MGM Studios.
The live stage show featured human-sized versions of the Muppets.
Walt: The Man Behind the Myth Airs (2001)
On this day in 2001, Walt: The Man Behind the Myth aired on ABC.
The documentary was narrated by Dick Van Dyke and featured interviews with those closest to Walt.
Cinderellabration Ends (2006)
On this day in 2006, Cinderellabration was performed for the final time at Walt Disney World.
Handy Manny Debuts (2006)
On this day in 2006, Handy Manny made its debut on the Disney Channel.
The animated series starred Wilmer Valderrama as Manny Garcia a cheerful handyman.
Disney Unveils Plans for Bay Lake Tower (2008)
On this day in 2008, Disney unveiled plans for Bay Lake Tower at Disney’s Contemporary Resort.
The new 15-story tower was built as part of the Disney Vacation Club.
Newsies Premieres (2011)
Finally, on this day in 2011, Newsies, the Musical premiered at Paper Mill Playhouse in Millburn, New York.
The new play was based on the 1992 film that told the story of the 1899 newsboys strike in New York City.
