Taika Waititi Gives Disappointing Update On His Star Wars Film
Although Lucasfilm finally announced that three more Star Wars films would be coming to theaters, many of the planned Star Wars projects announced over the last five years have never come to fruition.
At one time, Lucasfilm announced that Rian Johnson would be directing his own trilogy, another report had Marvel head honcho Kevin Feige entering a galaxy far, far, away, and then of course there was Patty Jenkins’ Rouge Squadron film that never took off.

While that trio of projects seems to be dead, another potential Star Wars movie directed by Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi has continued to chug forward.
Waititi’s Star Wars Journey
Waititi’s Star Wars film was initially announced in 2020 with Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy stating, “Taika’s approach to Star Wars will be fresh, unexpected, and…unique. His enormous talent and sense of humor will ensure that audiences are in for an unforgettable ride.”

Over the past three years, updates on Waititi’s Star Wars project have been few and far between. Earlier this year, however, Kennedy gave an update that revealed the film was still in production.
“Taika is working away. He’s just, and he won’t get mad at me for saying this, slow. We’ve got a couple of acts, we need a third,” Kennedy said.

Five months later, Waititi himself has given another update on his Star Wars project, and it doesn’t sound promising.
A Disappointing Update
Waititi recently presented filmmaker Shawn Levy with the TIFF Tribute Award, with the Deadpool 3 director set to helm a Star Wars film himself, Waititi joked that Levy could beat him to the punch.

“Once he’s had his way with [the Deadpool] franchise, like a cruel and indiscriminate virus, he’ll move on to another, and another, and another. And then eventually, probably Star Wars. And unlike me, maybe this guy manages to finish the script for that.”
While Waititi obviously made the comment in jest, his light-hearted ribbing of Levy does seem to confirm that the Thor: Love and Thunder director still hasn’t even finished his Star Wars script.
While we may still get to see Waititi’s take on Star Wars, I wouldn’t hold my breath.
