Welcome back to our continuing journey through Disney’s past. Today we are looking at the events on this day in Disney history- September 1.
September 1st was a huge day in Disney history, with the release of a slew of cartoons, the end of a short-lived Disneyland parade and the closing of a classic Magic Kingdom attraction. So, let’s get going!
Peculiar Penguins Released (1934)
On this day in 1934, the Silly Symphony cartoon Peculiar Penguins was released.
In the cartoon Peter and Polly penguin share a romance, but their happiness is soon threatened by the arrival of a shark.
The Autograph Hound Released (1939)
On this day in 1939, The Autograph Hound was released.
In the cartoon, while trying to collect autographs, Donald met a number of movie stars including Greta Garbo, Mickey Rooney, Shirley Temple, Clark Gable, Katherine Hepburn, and the Marx Brothers.
The Plastics Inventor Released (1944)
On this day in 1944, the Donald Duck cartoon The Plastics Inventor was released.
In the short, Donald decides to build an airplane with instructions from a radio show.
Hook, Lion, and Sinker Released (1950)
On this day in 1950, the Disney short Hook, Lion, and Sinker was released.
In the cartoon, Louie the Mountain Lion attempts to steal prizes from Donald Duck’s fishing expedition.
The Stage Door Cafe Opens (1978)
On this day in 1978, The Stage Door Cafe opened in Frontierland at Disneyland.
AT&T Renews Sponsorship of Spaceship Earth (1993)
On this day in 1993, Diseny announced that AT&T would renew its sponsorship of Spaceship Earth at EPCOT Center.
The company’s sponsorship would continue until 2004 when Siemens picked up sponsorship.
Captain EO Closes (1996)
On this day in 1996, Captain EO closed in Tokyo Disneyland.
The Michael Jackson 3D film originally opened in 1986. It would return in 2010 for a 4-year run.
Light Magic Ends (1997)
On this day in 1997, Light Magic ended its run at Disneyland.
The parade was billed as a replacement for the 24-year-old Main Street Electrical Parade but lasted less than a year.
Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room Closes (1997)
Also on this day in 1997, Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room closed in the Magic Kingdom.
The Magic Kingdom opening day attraction would be replaced by The Enchanted Tiki Room (Under New Management) in April 1998.
Honey, I Shrunk the Kids: The TV Show Premieres (1997)
Also on this day in 1997, Honey, I Shrunk the Kids: The TV Show premiered.
Based on the popular 1989 film Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, the show would run for 66 episodes.
Pooh’s Hunny Hunt Opens (2000)
On this day in 2000, Pooh’s Hunny Hunt opened at Tokyo Disneyland.
A more elaborate version of the Walt Disney World attraction, the attraction took guests through a Winnie the Pooh storybook.
The Kingdom Keepers Released (2005)
On this day in 2005, Disney Editions released Ridley Pearson’s The Kingdom Keepers.
The first in a series of novels, the book tells the story of five teenagers who end up inside Disney World after dark.
Pooh’s Playful Spot Opens (2005)
Also on this day in 2005, Pooh’s Playful Spot opened in the Magic Kingdom.
The new playground was designed for 2 to 5-year-olds.
A New O’Canada Opens (2007)
On this day in 2007, an updated version of O’ Canada opened in Epcot.
The new version of the attraction was hosted by Martin Short and created in collaboration with the Canadian Tourism Commission.
Disneyland’s Fantasmic Dragon Debuts (2009)
On this day in 2009, Disneyland’s Fantasmic animatronic dragon debuted.
The dragon would continue to be a part of the show until 2023.
Dean Jones Passes Away (2015)
On this day in 2015, Disney Legend Dean Jones died a the age of 84.
Jones was best known for his work in Disney films including “The Love Bug”, “That Darn Cat” and “The Shaggy D.A.”.
Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Closed (2019)
On this day in 2019, Disneyland Paris’ Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster closed.
The attraction was closed to make way for a new Iron Man overlay of the attraction.
