‘X-Men 97’ Star Talks Reviving The Animated Classic
While most Marvel fans are gearing up for The Marvels to hit theaters, or Loki Season 2 to premiere on DIsney+, I am sitting here patiently waiting for X-Men ’97 to debut.
For those who don’t know, X-Men ’97 will be a revival of the immensely popular X-Men: The Animated Series which originally aired from 1993 until 1997.
For those of us who grew up in the 1990s, we fell in love with Marvel through shows like X-Men: The Animated Series or Spider-Man: The Animated Series. To see these characgters return almost 30 years later is a dream come true.
Iconic Voice Actors Return
Not only will X-Men ’97 continue the original series’ story, but it is also bringing back most of its original voice actors.
One of those returning stars, Lenore Zann, who voices Rouge, sat down with Toonado to discuss the reboot.
“It’s fantastic to get this opportunity to re-inhabit the character of Rogue who is my favorite character I’ve played to date. I’m grateful to the fans for their loyalty and support for our original series – and for my performance – which has made this possible.”
Even after its original run ended, X-Men: The Animated Series continued to be a fan-favorite show. While this long-time support surely encouraged Marvel Studios to bring the show back, Zann also went out of her way to credit showrunner Beau DeMayo and Charley Feldman for “insisting” that she return.
“And I’m also grateful to Beau DeMayo and Charley Feldman from ‘X-Men ’97’ for insisting I come back as Rogue.”
“A Wild Ride”
While we know that X-Men ’97 will pick up where the previous show left off, not much else is known about the upcoming series’ story. Showrunner DeMayo has previously stated, however, that some of the X-Men will be looking to enjoy the “life of acceptance” that they’ve fought for.
“Other X-Men like Jean and the will they, won’t they couple Gambit and Rogue are starting to begin to question, ‘Maybe there is a life… we’ve been fighting for this life of acceptance, can we just go out there and enjoy it for once, maybe?'” he said.
According to Zann, Rouge fans should “buck up for a wild ride”.
“As usual, Rogue will go through a lot in ‘X-Men ’97′” Zahnn explained. Like me, she’s a passionate woman who can’t help wearing her heart on her sleeve. So, buckle up for a wild ride!”
When Will X-Men ’97 Debut?
While X-Men ’97 was initially slated to debut in the Fall of 2023, that no longer seems to be the case. Although Disney hasn’t officially delayed the show, the radio silence from Marvel would seem to indicate that the show will now debut in 2024.
