Former ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ Star Talks Possible Johnny Depp Return
As hard as it may be to believe, it has been twenty years since The Curse of the Black Pearl set sail and launched the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise into the stratosphere.
That’s right, it has been two decades since audiences were first introduced to Will Turner, Elizabeth Swann, Captain Barbosa, and of course Captain Jack Sparrow.
Twenty years, and five films later, Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow has become one of the most iconic characters in the history of cinema.
In recent years, however, the relationship between Depp and Disney has hit choppy waters.
Disney Drops Depp
Disney dropped Depp from the Pirates franchise following accusations of domestic abuse by Amber Heard.
During his subsequent defamation trial against Heard, Depp talked about how hurt he was by Disney’s decision to remove him from the Pirates franchise.
“I didn’t quite understand how after that long relationship, and quite a successful relationship certainly for Disney, that suddenly I was guilty until proven innocent,” Depp testified during his trial.
When asked under oath, “The fact is, Mr. Depp, if Disney came to you with $300 million and a million alpacas, nothing on this earth would get you to go back and work with Disney on a ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ film? Correct?”
Depp responded, “That is true, Mr. Rottenborn.”
Vince Lozano Weighs In
As they say, however, time heals all wounds. Earlier this year, rumors began to swirl that Depp could return to the franchise, especially after a potential Margot Robbie Pirates film was canceled.
In a recent interview with Movieweb, original Pirates actor Vince Lozano reflected back on his time in the franchise.
“Hanging out with [other] pirates, telling stories, building some camaraderie, making jokes on each other of course. Hanging out with Geoffrey Rush, talking about acting, life; same thing with Johnny Depp. Asking him, ‘How did you come up with this character? ‘He would tell me stories about how he did it, jumping into a pool, coming out cold and thinking about how British musician Keith Richards moved his body. Johnny is one of the best people you’ll ever meet.”
Will Depp Return?
When asked if he thought Depp would return to the franchise, Lozano said that while he deserved another chance, he didn’t think the actor would return.
“I think he deserves another shot as Jack, but I don’t think it’s going to happen, I’m hearing a lot of stories out there. The audience is there though. I do a lot of pirate conventions and there’s such a big subculture of people that dress up like pirates, and they love Johnny.”
For now, it appears that a return of Captain Jack Sparrow is a long shot. Pirates of the Caribbean has proven to be a widely successful franchise for Disney however, so never say never.
