This Day in Disney History- August 21
Welcome back to our continuing foray into the Walt DIsney Company’s past. Today we are looking at the events on this day in Disney history- August 21.
August 21st was a slower day in Disney history, but it still featured the closure of a classic Disneyland attraction, the end of an Animal Kingdom boat ride and the debut of a new Castaway Cay landmark. So, let’s get started!
Disneyland’s PeopleMover Closes (1995)
On this day in 1995, the PeopleMover closed at Disneyland.
Originally opening in 1967, the PeopleMover took guests on a grand circle tour above Tomorrowland. The attraction was replaced by the short-lived Rocket Rods in 1998.
Genius Released (1999)
On this day in 1999, the Disney Channel Original Movie Genius was released.
The film told the story of a teenager named Charlie Boyle who despite being a genius is tied of having no friends.
The Discovery River Boats Closed (1999)
Also on this day in 1999, the Discovery River Boats closed at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.
The attraction transported guests from Safari Village to the Asia section of the park, giving unique views of various Animal Kingdom landmarks.
Brandy and Mr. Whiskers Premieres (2004)
On this day in 2004, Brandy & Mr. Whiskers premiered on the Disney Channel.
The animated series told the story of a pampered dog (Brandy) and an easily excited rabbit (Mr. Whiskers).
The Muppet Mobile Lab Debuts (2007)
On this day in 2007 The Muppet Mobile Lab debuted at EPCOT.
The roaming lab featured Muppets Dr. Bensen Honeydew and Beaker riding on a two-wheeled rocket ship and interacting with guests.
Spring-A-Leak Opens on Castaway Cay (2010)
On this day in 2010, Spring-A-Leak opened on Castaway Cay.
Created for visitors on the Disney Cruise Line, the 2,400-square-foot water play area was themed to look like a storm-ravaged structure.
The 2011 D23 Expo Ends (2011)
On this day in 2011, the D23 Expo took place for its third and final day.
Among the panels that day were Imagineering The Dream and the Fantasy, The Making of Star Tours- The Adventure Continues, and a panel featuring the filmmakers behind Monsters University and Brave.
