Ron DeSantis Asks Florida Inspector General To Investigate Former Reedy Creek Board
Despite telling CNBC last week that he had moved on from his feud with The Walt Disney Company, Ron DeSantis once again has the Mouse House in his sights.
The Florida Governor has now asked the state’s Inspector General to investigate whether the former Disney-appointed Reedy Creek Improvement District board spent $2 million of taxpayer money on perks.
Here’s What Happened
The DeSantis-appointed Central Florida Tourism Oversight District (CFTOD) board, which replaced Reedy Creek, told the Inspector General on Monday that the previous board paid Disney more than $2 million in 2022. These payments were allegedly paid to give board members Walt Disney World Annual Passes and discounts on merchandise, hotels, food, and beverages.
According to the new board’s finding, Reedy Creek Board members spent $492,382.96 for park tickets, $16,837.39 for merchandise discounts, $4,969.52 in food and beverage discounts and $3,764.48 in a water parks discount.
Additionally, employees for the district spent thousands on resort stays at Disney’s Yacht Club, Disney’s Caribbean Beach, and Disney’s Coronado Springs Resorts.
In order to find any improper behavior by their predecessors, the CFTOD combed through thousands of documents.
A Florida law caps board members’ compensation at $100 per month.
An Ongoing Feud
Between Disney filing a countersuit against the CFOTD in state court and today’s announcement that Governor DeSantis wants the Florida Inspector General to investigate Reedy Creek’s spending, it doesn’t appear as if the back and forth between DeSantis and Disney will end anytime soon.
