Welcome back to our magical journey through The Walt Disney Company’s past. Today we are looking at the events on this day in Disney history- August 15.
August 15th was a massive day in Disney history, with the loss of a Disney Legend, the return of a Magic Kingdom favorite, and the announcement that Star Wars lands were coming to Disney’s parks. So, let’s get started!
Wild Waves Released (1929)
On this day in 1929, the Mickey Mouse cartoon Wild Waves was released.
In the cartoon, Mickey has to save Minnie who has been dragged out to sea.
Make Mine Music Released (1946)
On this day in 1946, Make Mine Music was released.
The film was a compilation of ten different musical shorts including the popular Casey at the Bat, Peter and Wold, and The Whale Who Wanted to Sing at the Met.
Spaceship Earth Closed For Refurbishment (1994)
On this day in 1994, Spaceship Earth closed for refurbishment.
While closed, the attraction would receive a new finale, additional scenes, a new musical score and a new narration by Jeremy Irons.
Jungle Cubs: Born to Be Wild Released (1997)
On this day in 1997, Jungle Cubs: Born to Be Wild was released.
The VHS was a collection of three episodes of the animated series Jungle Cubs.
Disney Wonder Embarks On Maiden Voyage (1999)
On this day in 1999, the Disney Wonder embarked on its maiden voyage.
The second ship to join the Disney fleet, the Wonder can accommodate 2,400 passengers.
Mission: Space Has A Soft Opening (2003)
On this day in 2003, Mission: SPACE had its first soft opening in Epcot.
The attraction would officially open in October 2003.
Merlin Performs Final Sword in the Stone Show (2006)
On this day in 2006, Merlin performed his final Sword in the Stone show at the Magic Kingdom.
Merlin had been helping young guests try their might and pull out the sword since 1994.
Virginia Davis Passes Away (2009)
On this day in 2009, Disney Legend Virginia Davis passed away at age 90.
Davis was the original Alice in Disney’s Alice Comedies, appearing in thirteen titles.
Harrison “Buzz” Price Passes Away (2010)
On this day in 2010, Disney Legend Harrison “Buzz” Price passed away at age 89.
Price was one of Walt Disney’s most trusted financial advisors, and helped Walt and Roy Disney find the best location for Disneyland.
Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room Opens (2011)
On this day in 2011, Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room reopened at the Magic Kingdom.
The show was essentially the same as the Tropical Serenade show that ran from 1971 until 1998.
The Tiki Room’s previous show The Enchanted Tiki Room (Under New Management) was replaced after a small fire broke out in the attic and damaged one of the show’s Iago Audio-Animatronics.
How to Build a Better Boy Premieres (2014)
On this day in 2014, the Disney Channel Original Movie How to Build a Better Boy premiered.
In the film, teens Mae and Gabby decide to use high-tech military equipment to build the ideal guy
Disney Announces Star Wars Lands (2015)
Finally, on this day in 2015, Disney announced that Star Wars lands were being developed for both Walt Disney World and Disneyland.
Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge would eventually open in both parks in 2019.
