August 14th was a big day in Disney history, with the release of a new cartoon, the naming of a new company president, and a special Star Wars event. So, let’s get started!
Donald Duck Day Celebrated (1939)
On this day in 1939, Donald Duck Day was celebrated at the 1939 World’s Fair.
For the festivities, Donald was flown in from Hollywood to attend the premiere of his latest cartoon Donald’s Penguin.
T-Bone For Two Released (1942)
On this day in 1942, the Pluto cartoon T-Bone for Two was released.
In the cartoon, Pluto battles with Butch the bulldog over a bone.
Michael Ovitz Named President of The Walt Disney Company (1995)
On this day in 1995, Michael Ovitz was appointed president of The Walt Disney Company.
Seen as a possible successor to CEO Michael Eisner, Ovitz’s Disney tenure would only last for 14 months.
The Disneyland Hotel’s Towers Change Names (2007)
On this day in 2007, the towers at the Disneyland Hotel had their names changed.
The Martha Tower was renamed the Magic Tower, the Sierra Tower was rechristened the Dreams Tower and the Bonita Tower was changed to the Wonder Tower.
Ponyo Released (2009)
On this day in 2009, Disney released Ponyo in the United States.
The Japanese animated film told the story of a 5-year-old boy who meets a goldfish girl who dreams of becoming a human.
The Last Tour to Endor Held (2010)
On this day in 2010, The Last Tour to Endor special event was held at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
The event allowed attendees to ride Star Tours before it closed on September 8. On hand for the event was George Lucas!
Walt Before Mickey Debuts (2015)
On this day in 2015, Walt Before Mickey debuted at the AMC Theater at Downtown Disney.
The film tells the story of Walt Disney’s early career.
Magic Camp Released (2020)
On this day in 2020, Magic Camp was released on Disney+.
The film tells the story of a straight-laced banker who returns to the magic camp he attended as a boy.
