August 2nd was a slower day in Disney history, but it still featured the return of a popular Disneyland parade, the debut of a Disney Channel film, and an honor for a Disney Legend. So, let’s get started!
Disney Announces Plans To Expand The Disney-MGM Studios (1989)
On this day in 1989, Disney announced plans to double the size of the entertainment area of the Disney-MGM Studios.
Over the next three years, areas that were formally part of the Studio Backlot Tour were transformed into theme park space.
First Disney Guests Visit Castaway Cay (1998)
On this day in 1998, the first Disney guests set foot on Castaway Cay.
Passengers aboard Disney Magic’s maiden voyage became the first visitors to Disney’s private island.
The Disney Wonder Heads To Florida (1999)
On this day in 1999, the Disney Wonder was brought to Port Canaveral.
The newest Disney Cruise Line ship was escorted to Florida by its sister ship the Disney Magic.
Soundstage 2 Rededicated “The Julie Andrews Stage” (2001)
On this day in 2001, Disney’s Soundstage 2 was rededicated as The Julie Andrews Stage.
On hand for the dedication were Andrews, Dick Van Dyke, and songwriter Richard Sherman. Both Mary Poppins and The Princess Diaries were filmed on the stage.
Guy Williams Given a Star On The Walk of Fame (2001)
On this day in 2001, Guy Williams was posthumously given a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Williams, who passed away in 1989 was best known as the star of Disney’s Zorro.
Phineas and Ferb: Summer Belongs To You Airs (2010)
On this day in 2010, Phineas and Ferb: Summer Belongs to You aired on Disney XD.
In the film, Phineas and Ferb decide to travel around the world in one day in order to create the “biggest, longest, funnest summer day of fall time.”
Phillip Phillips Visits Disney’s Hollywood Studios (2012)
On this day in 2012, American Idol winner Phillip Phillips surprised guests and made an appearance at The American Idol Experience.
Phillips performed at Disney’s Hollywood Studios attraction and also filmed a short video that would later be used during the experience.
Descendants 3 Airs (2019)
On this day in 2019, Descendants 3 aired on the Disney Channel.
The third installment in the Descendants series was watched by 4.59 million viewers.
The Main Street Electrical Parade Returns to Disneyland (2019)
On this day in 2019, The Main Street Electrical Parade returned to Disneyland for a limited engagement.
The nighttime parade first ran at Disneyland from 1972 until 1996.
