Is Maria Hill Really Dead After ‘Secret Invasion’?
Perhaps the most shocking moment in the Disney+ series Secret Invasion, was the death of fan-favorite character Maria Hill.
The former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent had been a core member of the Marvel Cinematic Universe since 2012’s The Avengers.

A super-spy in her own right, and a close confidant of Nick Fury, Hill appeared in every Avengers film, in addition to Spider-Man: No Way Home, Captain America: The Winter Solider, and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Portrayed by Cobie Smulders, Maria Hill had become a fan-favorite character.
Then, the unthinkable happened. After being heavily featured in the build-up to Secret Invasion, Hill was killed off in the series’ first episode. The fact that the MCU stalwart was killed by Samuel L. Jackson (Gravik shape-shifting into Nicky Fury), made Hill’s death all the more traumatic.

Is Maria Hill Really Dead?
Because of the nature of Secret Invasion, many fans speculated that Hill wasn’t really dead. Even when the series ended without bring the former head of S.H.I.E.L.D back to life, longtime MCU viewers continued to hold out hope.
According to Secret Invasion director Ali Selim, however, both Maria Hill and Talos (Ben Mendelssohn’s Skrull general) are in fact dead. Selim however was quick to point out that in the MCU “anything can happen”.
“I don’t know what’s going to happen to Maria Hill or Talos. They’re dead. One is burned, and the other is buried. But in the MCU, anything can happen. So, where are they going to end up? I don’t know.”
“My Job Is to Tell This Story”
According to Selim, in some ways, the death of Maria Hill and Talos was necessary to re-launch Nick Fury and get the character back to where he needed to be.

“I mean, my job is to tell this story within this box, within these six episodes. I do my best not to confuse myself or the audience with things outside the box. But there are also moments where Nick Fury needs to end up here, so the next film he is in works. I think we did a pretty good job of launching Nick Fury.”
How We Could See Smulters Again
Since her character’s death, Cobie Smulters has been open that it “feels strange” that Maria Hill is dead. Despite calling her final day in the MCU a “sad day”, however, Smulters has had nothing but good things to say about her time in the franchise.

Selim, for his part, was quick to praise Smulters, and noted that a possible future Maria Hill apperance in the MCU wasn’t out of the question.
“There is no sad day with Cobie Smulders. She is can-do. And she shows up, does her work, loves it and brings incredible spirit. She and Sam did have a bittersweet goodbye, but who knows where Maria Hill is gonna end up. I don’t think she has any superpowers or serum that will keep her alive forever, but they could always make a movie that takes place before 2023, in which Maria Hill shows up.”

While fan’s will likely continue to hold out hope that Maria Hill will somehow re-appear in the MCU, it seems as if her story is finished. Still, with Secret Wars on the horizon, anything is possible.
