Nia DaCosta Says ‘The Marvels’ Will Be “Really Wacky and Silly
One of the biggest criticisms of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in recent years, has been the irreverent tone that some of the post-Endgame films have taken.
While Marvel’s formula has long included moments of levity and wit, fans have grown concerned that Marvel is leaning too much into humor at the cost of any real stakes.
The poster child for this loss of balance has been Thor: Love and Thunder, which many fans felt was undermined by its constant barrage of jokes. While the lighter tone may have worked well for The Guardians of the Galaxy and even Thor: Ragnarok, apparently there is a (rainbow) bridge too far.
Here Comes ‘The Marvels’
While fans have been vocal that Marvel could use an junction of seriousness into its releases, it doesn’t sound like The Marvels will be the film that starts a new trend.

In an interview with Total Film Magazine, The Marvels director Nia DaCosta is instead promising that a “silly” sequel is on the way.
“I think superhero fatigue absolutely exists. The biggest difference from the other MCU movies to date is that it’s really wacky, and silly. The worlds we go to in this movie are worlds unlike others you’ve seen in the MCU. Bright worlds that you haven’t seen before.”

More Marvel Humor
On one hand, making The Marvels a zany adventure makes sense. Ms. Marvel was a lighter foray into the MCU, and Captain Marvel was criticized for taking itself a little too seriously.
On the other hand, I don’t know that the film is going to differentiate itself by being wacky. Between The Guardians of the Galaxy, Ant-Man, and Thor we have had quite a bit of wackiness in the MCU in recent years. Perhaps even too much.

The Marvels will land in theaters in on November 10.
