Let’s Celebrate International Cat Day With Disney Cats! 🐱
Did you hear?? It’s International Cat Day!
There are lots of Disney cat characters we know and love — from good to bad and everything in between — and today seemed like a good time to talk about some of our favorites. For the sake of this post, we’re sticking to typical housecats (well, kinda), although there are many other Disney cats we love!
Thomas O’Malley, Duchess, Toulouse, Berlioz, and Marie — The Aristocats
First up, you can’t get more classic than The Aristocats, an entire movie about cats! There are plenty of iconic cat characters in the movie, but we’re focusing on Thomas O’Malley, Duchess, and her three kittens, Berlioz, Toulouse, and Marie.
Duchess and her kittens meet Thomas O’Malley, a feral cat, after being abducted and left in the French countryside. Eventually, they make their way back to Paris with O’Malley’s help — and he joins the family!
What else can we say? They’re adorable cats living in Paris, and the film ends with their wealthy owner developing a charity to help house stray cats in Paris (we love a philanthropist). There’s even a live-action film in development!
Cheshire Cat — Alice in Wonderland
One of the most memorable cat characters is technically not really a cat, but a sort of magical Wonderland being who can slowly disappear — leaving his mischievous grin behind.
In Disney’s 1951 animated film, Alice in Wonderland, the Cheshire Cat helps Alice…but he also gets her in trouble.
There are many depictions of the Cheshire Cat but Disney’s animated purple and pink striped version remains a favorite to many even to this day. In Magic Kingdom, stop by the Cheshire Cafe to get a Cheshire Cat Tail pastry!
Figaro — Pinocchio
Figaro is another classic Disney cat who debuted in the 1940 animated film, Pinocchio, as Geppetto’s cat. This tuxedo cat became Walt Disney’s favorite character in the film, leading him to make Figaro the pet of Minnie Mouse as well!
The character of Figaro has undergone some changes throughout the years, going from Pinocchio’s pal to a rival of Pluto’s to a more friendly companion. Truthfully, we’ve never met a mean tuxedo cat!
Oliver — Oliver and Company
We couldn’t forget the sweet orphan kitty Oliver from Oliver and Company! This plucky kitten goes through of series of adventures before finally finding his forever family with a little girl named Jenny.
Oliver was inspired by the character Oliver Twist in the novel of the same name by Charles Dickens, and the 1996 movie has gained a cult following in recent years.
Lucifer — Cinderella
So yes, Lucifer is technically a villain, but we can’t help but love just how evil he is. Lucifer is Lady Tremaine’s cat in Cinderella, and he knowingly sabotages Cinderella and the bloodhound Bruno, while also trying to eat Cinderella’s mice friends.
Lucifer is clever and cruel, but he never really succeeds in his goals. You can see him in multiple Cinderella films and also in a variety of other cartoons, shorts, and films!
Yzma — The Emperor’s New Groove
Yzma is the main antagonist in the 2000 film The Emperor’s New Groove, and she transforms into a cat when she drinks the wrong potion. After being defeated, she remains in her cat form, which is why she makes the list.
We can’t help but love an evil villain in fuzzy cat form, and Yzma is especially cute with light gray fur and purple eyes. Eventually, Yzma transforms back into her human form in a variety of sequels, but we love Yzma as a cat the most.
Sox — Lightyear
Sox is the robotic cat companion of Buzz Lightyear in Pixar’s Lightyear, and he proves to be a good friend to Buzz. Despite being a robot, Sox behaves a lot like a real cat, purring when petted and rubbing against people’s legs.
Sox was given to Buzz by his friend and colleague Alisha, and he has the ability to provide emotional support as well as assist with a variety of tools and even override computers. When he first meets Buzz, Sox says, “Hello, Buzz. I am Sox, your personal companion robot.”
Goose — Captain Marvel
And finally, Goose is the former “cat” of Mar-Vell in Captain Marvel, and her path eventually crosses with Carol Danvers and Nick Fury. They discover that despite looking like a typical orange housecat, Goose is actually an alien species known as a Flerken.
As a Flerken, Goose has pocket dimensions inside her body, which allows her to store large tentacles that emerge from her mouth to swallow large objects whenever she chooses. She helps save the day more than a few times but she’s also responsible for scratching Nick Fury’s left eye, causing blindness. Oops.
And there you have it, folks! Some of our favorite Disney cats. Is your favorite on the list? Let us know!
