This Day in Disney History- August 6
Welcome back to our magical foray through Disney’s past. Today we are looking at the events on this day in Disney history- August 6.
August 6th was a slower day in Disney history, but it still featured the opening of a Disneyland attraction, the release of a cult classic film, and a heroic act by the Disney Magic. So, let’s get going!
Poor Papa Released (1928)
On this day in 1928, the Oswald the Lucky Rabbit short Poor Papa was released.
In the cartoon, Oswald is visit by the stork multiple times, and tries to scheme to stop the flow of babies.
The Flying Saucers Opens (1961)
ON this day in 1961, The Flying Saucers attraction opened in Disneyland’s Tomorrowland.
The attraction allowed guests to control their own floating saucer by leaning one way or the other.
The attraction would have continual technical problems and close after only 5 years.
Disneyland Forced To Close Early (1970)
On this day in 1970, Disneyland closed at 7:10 pm after being overrun by “hippies” and “radical yippies”.
After infiltrating the park the 750 radicals took over the Wilderness Ford, raised the VIetcong flag and eventually marched down Main Street.
A riot was adverted by the Anaheim Police, who arrived in full riot gear.
Ollie Hopnoodle’s Haven of Bliss Premiers (1988)
On this day in 1988, Ollie Hopnoodle’s Haven of Bliss premiered on the DIsney Channel.
The film followed the same Parker family from A Christmas Story on their annual vacation to Ollie Hopnoodle’s Haven of Bliss.
Disneyland’s Monorail Cafe Closes (1999)
On this day in 1999, Disneyland’s Monorail Cafe was released.
The restaurant, which was part of the Disneyland Hotel, was closed to make room for Downtown Disney.
Freaky Friday Released (2003)
On this day in 2003, Freaky Friday was released in theaters.
A remake of the 1976 Disney comedy, the film starred Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan as a mother and daughter who switch bodies.
Tiger Cruise Premieres (2004)
On this day in 2004, Tiger Cruise aired on the Disney Channel.
The Disney Channel Original Movie told the story of a Navy commander who is at sea with his family when they learn that September 11 attacks have occurred.
One Man Band Premieres (2005)
On this day in 2005, Pixar’s One Man Band premiered at the Melbourne International Film Festival.
The short told the story of a peasant girl, who wants to use her one coin to make a wish at the Piazza fountain. Two competing street musicians have other idea.
Disney Magic Rescues 18 People At Sea (2010)
On this day in 2010, when sailing from Gibraltar to Barcelona, the Disney Magic recused 18 people who were lost at sea.
After receiving an SOS call stating that a nearby ship had heard screams in the water, the Magic found 18 Algerians who had been lost at sea for 4 to 5 days.
