Welcome back to our continuing journey through the history of The Walt Disney Company. Today we are looking at the events on this day in Disney history- July 28.
July 28th was an important day in Disney’s history, with the release of an animated classic, the groundbreaking of a Disney Vacation Club Resort, and the christening of Disney’s first cruise ship! So, let’s get started!
The Cat’s Out Released (1931)
On this day in 1931, the Silly Symphony cartoon The Cat’s Out was released.
The cartoon centered on a cat, who after being struck in the head, begins to hallucinate all sorts of things.
Alice in Wonderland Released (1951)
On this day in 1951, Disney’s Alice in Wonderland was released.
The film, which had its premiere two days earlier, was based on the Lewis Carrol books “Through the Looking Glass” and “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.
Oilspot and Lipstick Premieres (1987)
On this day in 1987, Diney’s Oilspot and Lipstick premiered.
The experimental computer animated short told the story of two dogs, who are made out of junkyard metal parts.
The Main Street USA Bank of America Closes (1993)
On this day in 1993, the Main Street USA branch of Bank of America closed.
The bank had been open since the park opened in 1955!
Groundbreaking of Vero Beach Takes Place (1994)
On this day in 1994, groundbreaking took place on Disney’s Vacation Club Resort in Vero Beach.
The resort was expected to open in October 1995, and was the first Disney resort built separately from a Disney park.
Operation Dumbo Drop Released (1995)
On this day in 1995, Disney released Operation Dumbo Drop.
Based on a true story, the film told the story of Green Berets, who attempted to transport an elephant through the jungle during the Vietnam War.
The Disney Magic Christened (1998)
On this day in 1998, Disney’s first cruise ship The Magic was christened by Patty Disney, Roy E. Disney’s Wife.
On hand for the festivities were George Lucas, David Robinson, and Travis Tritt.
Buzz Aldrin Rides Mission: SPACE (2003)
On this day in 2003, retired astronaut Buzz Aldrin took the controls aboard Mission: SPACE at Epcot.
The segment aired during ABC’s showing of Mission to Mars.
Penn Zero: Part-Time Hero Airs (2017)
Finally, on this day in 2017, the final episode of Penn Zero: Part-Time Hero aired on Disney XD.
The show was made up of 35 episodes which aired over two seasons.
