Christopher Nolan Hints That He Would Be Open To Directing Star Wars
Christopher Nolan may be done with the superhero genre, but that doesn’t mean he would say no to another kind of franchise.
In a rapid-fire round of yes or no questions, Nolan didn’t rule out the possibility that he could helm a Star Wars film.
While other topics such as “Batman” and “television” elicited a quick “no” from the Oppenheimer director when it came to Star Wars, Nolan simply said, “pass.”
That may not be confirmation that Nolan is joining a galaxy, far, far away. However, it also means he isn’t ruling it out.
What Made Star Wars Popular?
Although Nolan isn’t currently attached to a Star Wars project, the director did take aim at studio executives and fans for forgetting what made the franchise popular.
“Whether for budgetary reasons or reasons of control, studios now look at a screenplay as a series of events and say, ‘This is the essence of what the film is,'” he said. “That’s completely at odds with how cinema developed. Right from the Lumière brothers’ train pulling into the station, as a pure audiovisual experience. But it’s a very popular fallacy, sometimes with critics as well, quite frankly. That all that matters is the scale of the story being told.”
Incredible Visual Effects
When it comes to Star Wars, in particular, Nolan was even more clear.
“People will tell you that the success of Star Wars had nothing to do with its visual effects. And it was all down to its great story,” Nolan continued. “But, I mean, clearly, that’s not the case. It is indeed a great story, but it’s also an incredible visual and aural experience. So this willful denial of what movies actually are has set in.”
While nothing is set in stone, seeing Nolan direct a Star Wars film would be a sight to behold.
