Welcome back to our continuing journey through Disney’s past. Today we are looking at the events on this day in Disney history- July 14.
July 14th was a slower day in Disney history, but it still featured the release of a Disney live-action film, the loss of a veteran Disney voice actor, and the opening of a new Hong Kong Disneyland attraction. So, let’s get going!
The Flying Mouse Released (1934)
On this day in 1934, the Silly Symphony cartoon The Flying Mouse was released.
Directed by David Hand, the cartoon was groundbreaking in its depiction of personality in an animated character.
The Monkey’s Uncle Released (1965)
On this day in 1965, The Monkey’s Uncle was released.
The film starred Tommy Kirk and Annette Funicello. In the movie, Merlin Jones (Kirk) discovers a method to teach a chimpanzee advanced information.
Disney Announces Plans To Create EPCOT (1975)
On this day in 1975, Disney announced its plans to build an Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow (EPCOT).
Disney moved forward with Walt’s original dream of creating EPCOT, although the idea would shift from a city to a theme park.
The American Egg House Opens (1978)
On this day in 1978, The American Egg House opened on Main Street in Disneyland.
The new restaurant was christened by Howard Hemler, who broke the world record for omelet preparation. Hemler produced 217 two-egg omelets in 30 minutes.
Spirit of Mickey Day Held (1998)
On this day in 1998, Spirit of Mickey Day was held in Marceline, Missouri.
Hosted by the Walt Disney Company, the festivities featured personal appearances by Disney characters.
Ready to Run Premieres (2000)
On this day in 2000, the Disney Channel Original Movie Ready to Run premiered.
The film told the story of a 14-year-old girl who dreams of becoming a jockey.
Cadet Kelly Airs on ABC (2002)
On this day in 2002, Cadet Kelly aired on The Wonderful World of Disney.
The film was the first Disney Channel Original Movie to premiere on ABC.
Dallas R. McKennon Passes Away (2009)
On this day in 2009, actor Dallas R. McKennon passed away at 89.
Primarily known as a voice actor, his Disney Credits included Lady and the Tramp, Sleeping Beauty, and One Hundred and One Dalmatians.
Disney Parks fans will remember McKennon for his work as Ben Franklin in the American Adventure, Zeke in the Country Bear Jamboree, and as the prospector on Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. McKennon utters the famous line “Hold on to your hats and glasses… this here’s the wildest ride in the wilderness!”
The Sorcerer’s Apprentice Released (2010)
On this day in 2010, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice was released.
The film was loosely based on the Sorcerer’s Apprentice segment of Disney’s Fantasia and starred Nicolas Cage.
Big Grizzly Mountain Runaway Mine Cars Opens (2012)
On this day in 2012, Big Grizzly Mountain Runaway Mine Cars opened in Hong Kong Disneyland.
The new roller coaster is located in the park’s Grizzly Gulch section.
