Welcome back to our continuing trip through Disney’s past. Today we are looking at the events on this day in Disney history- July 7.
July 7th was a busy day in Disney history, with the opening of a Tokyo Disneyland hotel, the release of a fan-favorite film, and the loss of a Disney Legend. So, let’s get started!
Mickey Steps Out Released (1931)
On this day in 1931, the Mickey Mouse cartoon Mickey Steps Out was released.
In the cartoon, Mickey and Pluto are dressed up and ready to go out with Minnie, when an alley cat ruins their afternoon.
Summer Magic Released (1963)
On this day in 1963, Summer Magic was released.
The film starred Hayley Mills and Burl Ives, and told the story of a widow and her three children who leave life in the big city behind to head to Maine.
UB Iwerks Passes Away (1971)
On this day in 1971, UB Iwerks passed away.
The Disney Legend began working with Walt Disney in 1919 and would animate such Mickey classics as Plane Crazy, Steamboat Willie and Gallopin’ Gaucho.
Iwerks would also invent the muliplane camera and the sodium vapor process that allowed Disney to combine live-action and animation
Now You See Him, Now You Don’t Premieres (1972)
On this day in 1972, Now You See Him, Now You Don’t premiered in Edmonton, Canada.
In the film, Medfield College student Dexter Riley (Kurt Russell) comes up with a lab experiment that produces invisibility.
Gus Released (1976)
On this day in 1976, Disney’s Gus was released.
The film told the story of a foot-ball kicking mule and his trainer.
Promenade Gifts and Restaurant Hokusai Open (1984)
On this day in 1984, Promenade Gifts and Restaurant Hokusai opened in Tokyo Disneyland.
Ernest Goes to Splash Mountain Airs (1989)
On this day in 1989, Ernest Goes to Splash Mountain aired on The Disney Channel.
IN the special, Earnest P. Worrell, who is training to become America’s first “Splashtranaut” seems destined to become the first person to conquer Disneyland’s newest mountain.
Disney Ambassador Hotel Opens (2000)
On this day in 2000, the Disney Ambassador Hotel opened at the Tokyo Disney Resort.
The Kid Released (2000)
Also on this day in 2000, The Kid was released.
Starring Bruce Willis, Spencer Breslin and Lily Tomlin, the film told the story of a successful image consultant whose life is turned upside down when he magically meats Rusty- himself as an 8-year-old.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest Released (2006)
On this day in 2006, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest was released.
The second film in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, the film found Captain Jack Sparrow racing to recover the heart of Davy Jones.
Pirates of the Caribbean Reopens (2006)
Also on this day in 2006, Pirates of the Caribbean re-opened in the Magic Kingdom.
The attraction now featured Audio-Animatronics of Captain Jack Sparrow and Captain Barbarossa.
7D Debuts (2014)
On this day in 2014, The 7D debuted on Disney XD.
The animated series was a re-imagining of Snow White and Seven Dwarfs.
Monsters At Work Debuts (2021)
On this day in 2021, Monsters at Work debuted on DIsney+.
The new computer-animated series starred Billy Crystal and John Goodman and continued the story of 2001’s Monsters, Inc.
