Oscar-Winning Actor Alan Arkin Has Passed Away at 89
The family of Alan Arkin has confirmed that he has passed away at the age of 89.
According to People, Arkin’s sons Adam, Matthew, and Anthony issued a statement: “Our father was a uniquely talented force of nature, both as an artist and a man. A loving husband, father, grand and great grandfather, he was adored and will be deeply missed.”
A Long Career
Alan Arkin had a long and storied career from the stage to the big screen. Arkin was born in Brooklyn, New York on March 26th, 1934, and later moved to Los Angeles with his family. He briefly played guitar and sang in the folk group the Tarriers, but later quit the band and became an early member of the Second City improv group in Chicago.
After making his debut on Broadway in 1961 in From the Second City, he followed that performance with 1963’s Enter Laughing, for which he won a Tony Award. He followed his debut with many television and film roles, receiving four Academy Award nominations throughout his career, winning an Oscar for his role in Little Miss Sunshine in 2007.
Disney fans may remember Arkin from his appearance on The Muppet Show or in The Muppets, as well as roles in films such as The Santa Clause 3, The Rocketeer, and the live-action remake of Dumbo. He has most recently appeared in The Kominsky Method, for which he earned an Emmy Award nomination.
Arkin is survived by his wife Suzanne Newlander, sons Adam, Matthew, and Anthony. Our thoughts are with his family.
