Harrison Ford Reflects Back On The Dawn of Indiana Jones
With Harrison Ford set to don his iconic fedora for one last adventure as Indiana Jones, the legendary actor is taking some time to reflect on the franchise’s beginning.
Although Ford would eventually become synonymous with the globe-trotting adventurer, he was not George Lucas’ first choice for the role.
Tom Sellick Couldn’t Play Indy
In one of Hollywood’s great “what if’s?” the role of Indiana Jones was originally offered to Tom Sellick.
The actor, however, had recently signed a contract to star in the new CBS drama Magnum P.I., a role that would catapult him to stardom, and was thus unable to accept the role of the swashbuckling archeologist.
For his part, Ford had recently completed Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back under Lucas’ watchful eye. At the end of the filming, Lucas asked Ford to read the Raiders of the Lost Ark script.
“I didn’t know that it was a script that someone else had read and was unable to take the job of Indiana Jones because of a contract, Tom Selleck,” Ford recalled
“Delighted To Be Along For the Ride”
While the actor was “enthusiastic” about the screenplay and excited to work with Spielberg, he never could have imagined that he would be playing the character 40 years later.
“As far as I knew, it was a one-off,” Ford says now about Raiders. “I mean, I didn’t really have my head around anything but that job at work right there. I never thought of continuing on to make four films over 42 years now. But the opportunity came because the films were so satisfying for an audience, and they were made with such skill and ambition, and so I was delighted to be along for the ride.”
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny will see Harrison Ford return as the famed archeologist for one last adventure. Teaming up with goddaughter Helena Shaw, Jones must race against an ex-Nazi scientist to find an artifact that could change the course of history.
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is in theaters now.
