June 24th was a big day in Disney history, with the release of an iconic animated film, the opening of an EPCOT restaurant, and the premiere of the 100th Disney Channel original movie. So, let’s get going!
Bubble Bee Released (1949)
On this day in 1949, the Pluto cartoon Bubble Bee was released.
In the cartoon, Pluto must contend with a bee named Spike.
Darby O’Gill and the Little People Premieres (1959)
On this day in 1959, Darby O’Gill and the Little People premiered in Dublin Ireland.
In the film, a wily old coot matches wits with the king of the leprechauns and plays matchmaker for his daughter.
Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo Released (1977)
On this day in 1977, Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo was released.\
The third film in the series, Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo saw the return of champion race car driver Jim Douglas (Dean Jones) and his mechanic (Don Knotts).
The Lion King Released (1994)
On this day in 1994, The Lion King was released.
The film was a loose adaptation of Hamlet, with songs by Elton John and Tim Rice. The Lion King would eventually become the highest-grossing animated film of all time, and one the top ten highest-grossing movies ever.
The Electric Umbrella Opens (1994)
Also on this day in 1994, the Electric Umbrella opened in Epcot’s CommuniCore East.
The quick-service restaurant would remain a staple of the park until it closed in 2018.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest Premeries (2006)
On this day in 2006, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest had its world premiere at Disneyland.
The second installment in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, the film would be released on July 7.
Cars 2 Released (2011)
On this day in 2011, Cars 2 was released.
The second installment in the Cars franchise, the film saw Ligtninigng McQueen and Mater head to Japan and Europe to compete in the World Grand Prix. During the events, Mater becomes sidetracked with international espionage.
Lightning McQueen Meet and Greet Opens (2011)
On this day in 2011, a new Lightning McQueen and Mater meet-and-greet opened at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
The new meet-and-greet corresponded to the release of Cars 2.
The Annette Funicello Stage Dedicated (2013)
On this day in 2013, one of the stages at Walt Disney Studios was officially re-dedicated as the “Annette Funicello Stage”.
The stage where “The Mickey Mouse Club” was filmed was dedicated to the Disney Legend by CEO Bob Iger. Also on hand was fellow Disney Legend Richard Sherman.
Adventures In Babysitting Airs (2016)
On this day in 2016, the Disney Channel Original Movie Adventures in Babysitting aired.
The film was the 100th Disney Channel Original Movie and starred Sabrina Carpenter and Sofia Carson as two competing babysitters.
Bizaardvark Premieres (2016)
Finally, on this day in 2016, Bizaardvark premiered on the Disney Channel.
The series told the story of best friends Paige and Frankie who make video blogs for their popular online comedy channel. The series starred Madison Hu, Olivia Rodrigo, and Jake Paul.
