Typhoon Lagoon Holds World’s Largest Swimming Lesson
Typhoon Lagoon at Walt Disney World Resort was Florida’s largest event site Thursday for the World’s Largest Swimming Lesson! The World’s Largest Swimming Lesson is an annual event that was created to promote safe water practices globally. At Typhoon Lagoon more than 650 Florida youth from six nonprofit organizations took part in the event at Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon Water Park.
The event also took place at several Walt Disney World Resort hotel pools and the goal of the lessons were to help students develop the skills needed to swim safely.
“Students need access to these critical safety lessons, especially here in Florida where we’re surrounded by water,” said Tajiana Ancora-Brown, Director of External Affairs at Walt Disney World Resort. “Being able to host the largest site in the state means our impact on their lives is huge – whether they were inspired to pursue a career in recreation or pass the lessons along to their friends and family. These are skills and memories that will last them a lifetime!”
Leading the Swim Lesson was former Olympic Silver Medalist Maritza Correia McClendon. Correia was the first African American woman to make the US Olympic swim team. The swimmer participated in the event to drive home the importance of water safety. Learning to swim while staying safe is a critical skill to impart to kids. This becomes even more important to kids in areas like Florida with its numerous lakes, ponds, beaches, swimming pools, and waterways.
After the World’s Largest Swim Lessons, the participating students had a chance to show off their swimming skills and were able to spend the rest of the day enjoying Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon Water Park. Some Disney characters even showed up to congratulate the students including Mickey Mouse and Stitch. Disney’s incredible lifeguards were also on hand to learn about careers involving water safety.
The World’s Largest Swimming Lesson is just one of the many initiatives of Disney Future Storytellers which are designed to leave a lasting impact on students as they look toward the future. In addition, The World’s Largest Swim Lesson has been held annually for 14 years with the goal of teaching families the importance of learning to swim to prevent childhood drowning. This year’s World’s Largest Swimming Lesson is taking place today in 18 different countries on six continents over a 24-hour period.
