Welcome back to our continuing trip through the history of the Walt Disney Company. Today we are looking at the events on this day in Disney history- June 20.
June 20th was a busy day in Disney history, with the opening of Walt Disney World’s first water park, the announcement of a new theme park , and the debut of a Disney Channel favorite! So, let’s get started!
Moving Day and Mickey’s Rival Released (1936)
On this day in 1936, the Mickey Mouse cartoons Moving Day and Mickey’s Rival were released.
In Moving Day, Peg Leg Pete evicts Mickey and Donald from their home. In Mickey’s Rival, Mickey’s nemesis Mortimer Mouse tries to ruin Minnie’s picnic.
The Reluctant Dragon Released (1941)
On this day in 1941, The Reluctant Dragon was released.
The animated/live-action film starred Robert Benchley, who takes viewers on a tour of Walt Disney Studios. The film also featured cartoon segments Casey Jr, Old MacDonald Duck, and How To Ride A Horse.
Clown of the Jungle Released (1947)
On this day in 1947, the Donald Duck cartoon Clown of the Jungle was released.
While attempting to photograph wildlife, Donald is aggravated by the “clown of the jungle” the Aracuan Bird.
Father’s Week-End Released (1953)
On this day in 1953, the Goofy cartoon Father’s Week-End was released.
In the cartoon, Goofy is an average working man who parties on Saturday nights and tries to get some rest on Sunday.
One Little Indian Released (1973)
On this day in 1973, Disney released One Little Indian.
In the film, an army deserter played by James Garner flees by camel across the desert with a white boy who was raised by Indians.
River Country Opens (1976)
On this day in 1976, River Country opened.
Walt Disney World’s first water park allowed guests to revisit the “old swimming hole”. To open the water park, President Gerald Ford’s daughter Susan was on hand.
Disney Announces Plans For Disney’s Wild Animal Kingdom (1995)
On this day in 1995, Disney announced their plans to construct Disney’s Wild Animal Kingdom.
The fourth gate for Walt Disney World, the park would open as Disney’s Animal Kingdom in 1998.
The ExtraTERRORestrial Alien Encounter Opens (1995)
Also on this day in 1995, the ExtraTERRORestrial Alien Encounter opened in Walt Disney World’s Tomorrowland.
The “theater-in-the-round” attraction trapped guests in a room with an escaped alien!
Camp Rock Premieres (2008)
On this day in 2008, Camp Rock premiered on the Disney Channel.
The film starred the Jonas Brothers and Demi Lovato as Mitchie Torres, a teen girl who desperately wants to spend her summer at a prestigious rock ‘n’ roll camp.
Miles From Tomorrowland Debuts (2016)
Finally, on this day in 2016, season 2 of the animated series Miles from Tomorrowland debuted on Disney Junior.
The show centered on the Callisto family, who live on a spaceship in the year 2501.
