‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny’ Tracking Towards $60-$70 Million Debut
Disney has pulled out all of the stops for Harrison Ford’s last adventure as Indiana Jones.
Indiana Jones and The Dial of Destiny is expected to be a swan song for the actor, who first donned his trademark fedora 42 years ago.
The fifth and final installment in the franchise, Dial of Destiny will follow the events of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, which was released in 2008.
While that film was divisive with audiences and critics alike, Crystal Skull was still a box office success, hauling in over $790 million.
Early Numbers Have Arrived
While Disney was surely hoping for one last Indiana Jones blockbuster, early results for Dial of Destiny do not look promising.
The film received a tepid response from its premiere audience at the Cannes Film Festival, despite the fact that Ford was given an honorary Palme d’Or.
Critical reviews following the film’s release have likewise been underwhelming. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny currently holds a 54% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Now that we are just three weeks from the film’s general release, tracking companies are predicting a somewhat disappointing opening for the film.
Currently, the final installment in the Indiana Jones franchise is heading towards a $60 to $70 million opening weekend.
Those numbers would put Dial of Destiny far below the $100 million three-day debut that Kingdom of the Crystal Skull enjoyed.
Instead, the latest Indiana Jones escapade would be more on pace with recent action releases Mission: Impossible — Fallout and No Time To Die.
Disney Has Time
While Disney was likely hoping for a stronger debut, the company still has time to build a buzz around the film’s debut.
Currently, the film is skewed toward older audiences and lacking with those under 35. That generation of moviegoers has only been alive for Crystal Skull‘s release.
Whether or not Disney can drum up more interest in Dial of Destiny before the film’s release, it would be a shame to see Ford ride out on a sour note.
