Pixar Lays Off 75 Employees — Including The Creative Team Behind ‘Lightyear’
While The Walt Disney Company has concluded the 7,000 job cuts that Bob Iger promised last February, news from throughout the company is still coming out.
Pixar Animation Studios, for example, has eliminated 75 positions, including two executives behind the studio’s biggest flop. The job cuts mark the first time that the studio has eliminated jobs in a decade.
‘Lightyear’ Creatives Let Go
Among those leaving Pixar are two executives who were involved in 2022’s box-office flop Lightyear. Director Agnus MacLane, who not only helmed the Toy Story spinoff but also was part of the senior creative team on Toy Story 4 and Coco was let go. Additionally, Lightyear producer Galyn Susman has departed. Susman had been a part of Pixar since the release of the original Toy Story movie in 1995.
Susman was previously best known for “saving” Toy Story 2, by having a copy of the film on her home computer after Pixar accidentally deleted the film’s files.
Also leaving Pixar is Micahel Agulnek, Pixar’s vice president of worldwide publicity since 2015.
First Pixar Layoffs in a Decade
The cuts, which were a part of Diseny’s third and final round of layoffs. While the number of job losses was small compared to Pixar’s 1,200 employee base, they still could have a long-term impact on the studio.
The last time Pixar cut jobs was in 2013, after the studio postponed the release of the 2015 film The Good Dinosaur, and removed its director, Bob Peterson. About 30 positions were eliminated at that time.
