Ewan McGregor Reflects On His Star Wars Journey
Ewan McGregor’s Obi-Wan Kenobi has consistently been one of the most popular characters in Star Wars’ history, but McGregor has not always enjoyed his time in a galaxy far, far, away.
After assuming the role of Kenobi from the late Alex Guinness for the Star Wars prequel trilogy, McGregor reprised his role in last year’s Obi-Wan Kenobi limited series.

While the idea of McGregor returning to his role as the Jedi Master was a dream come true for Star Wars fans, there was a time when McGregor was unsure if he would return.
How McGregor Returned To Obi-Wan
“There was a constant social media noise about another Obi-Wan project, and I was constantly asked in every interview that I ever did,” he said. “Eventually I would answer truthfully and I would say, ‘Yes, I would totally be up for playing Obi-Wan Kenobi again.’”

Five or six years ago, Lucasfilm finally reached out to McGregor, asking if it was true that he would be open to returning.
“That’s where this started. And at that point, the conversation was just about the story. Taking Obi-Wan into a very broken place, starting with a man who’s lost his faith and has given up on life. And I thought that would be a fascinating place to start the story,” McGregor recalled.

Initially, Kenobi’s return was conceived as a movie.
“At that point, the story was very much a story about Obi-Wan Kenobi and Luke Skywalker,” McGregor said.
Eventually, however, the story was developed as a limited series helmed by Deborah Chow.

“Deborah took it and ran with it and made it what it became, which was amazing,” McGregor said.
While the Star Wars prequel trilogy was initially divisive amongst Star Wars fans, the films have been re-evaluated as kids who grew up with the prequels have reached adulthood.

An Improved Relationship
For McGregor, the experience of filming the prequels had soured him on a galaxy, far, far away.

“The prequels were quite difficult to make and quite difficult to deal with after they came out,” he recalled.
With the passage of time, however, McGregor’s relationship with Star Wars improved. Finally, he was ready to return as Obi-Wan Kenobi.
“There’s been a profound change in my relationship with ‘Star Wars’ and with the fans of ‘Star Wars’ and just in my feelings about it,” he said.
” [Kenobi] brought me right back into the ‘Star Wars’ world in a really nice way,” he said. “I’m really proud of it now. And it’s made me proud of that work then in a way that I probably wasn’t before.”
