Welcome back to our continuing journey though Disney’s past. Today we are looking at the events on this day in Disney history- June 1.
June 1st was a busy day in Disney history with opening of a water park, the debut of four new parades, and the return of a fan-favorite attraction. So, let’s get going!
Eric Larson Hired (1933)
On this day in 1933, Eric Larson was hired by the Disney Studios.
Larson would go on to animate such classics as , and become one of Walt’s Nine Old Men.
The First Mickey Mouse Watch Sold (1933)
Also on this day in 1933, the first Mickey Mouse watch was sold by Ingersoll-Waterbury.
The company was on the verge of bankruptcy before partnering with Disney.
Savage Sam Released (1963)
On this day in 1963, Savage Sam was released.
The sequel to Old Yeller, film starred Tommy Kirk and Kevin Chocoran.
A Dream Called EPCOT Premieres (1981)
On this day in 1981, the EPCOT Preview Center in the Magic Kingdom debuted the film a Dream Called EPCOT.
The film would continue to run until EPCOT Center’s opening in 1982.
Walt Disney World Monorail Extended
On this day in 1982, the Walt Disney World monorail line was extended from the Ticket and Transportation Center to the yet-to-be-open EPCOT Center.
If You Had Wings Closed (1987)
On this day in 1987, If You Had Wings closed in the Magic Kingdom.
With Eastern Airlines choosing not to renew their sponsorship of the attraction, Disney would remove all references to the company and reopen the attraction as If You Could Fly.
Typhoon Lagoon Opens (1989)
On this day in 1989, Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon opened.
The second water park to open at Walt Disney World, Typhoon Lagoon centered around Mount Mayday, and features one of the world’s largest wave pools.
Splashdown Photos Opens (1993)
On this day in 1993, Splashdown Photos opened at the exit to Splash Mountain at the Magic Kingdom.
In the new gift shop, guests could purchase their on-ride photos.
Mickey Mania Debuts (1994)
On this day in 1994, the Mickey Mania parade debuted at the Magic Kingdom.
The parade would run until September 1996.
The Lion King Celebration Debuts (1994)
On this day in 1994, The Lion King Celebration debuted at Disneyland.
The parade featured characters from the recently released animated film The Lion King.
Disneyland Paris’ Space Mountain Opens (1995)
On this day in 1995, Space Mountain: De la Terre a la Lune opened at Disneyland Paris.
A new twist on the popular Space Mountain attractions, Disneyland Paris’ version of the ride was based on the Jules Verne novel Form the Earth to the Moon.
The Lion King Celebration Closes (1997)
On this day in 1997, The Lion King Celebration gave its final performance.
The parade had been running since 1994.
Electrical Parade Dreamlights Opens (2001)
On this day in 2001, the Tokyo Disneyland Electrical Parade Dreamlights debuted.
The new parade featured Disney characters and over one million lights.
Disney Cinema Parade Opens (2002)
On this day in 2002, the Disney Cinema Parade opened at the Walt Disney Studio Paris.
The parade was the first Disney procession to be designed by an outside studio.
Journey Into Imagination With Figment Opens (2002)
Also on this day in 2002, Journey Into Imagination With Figment opened in Epcot.
A reworking of the Journey Into Your Imagination attraction, the new version of the ride reintroduced the popular Figment character.
Prince Charming Regal Carrousel Opens (2010)
On this day in 2010, Cinderella’s Golden Carousel was officially renamed the Prince Charming Regal Carrousel.
The attraction had been operating under the Golden Carousel name since 1981.
For the First Time in Forever: A Frozen Sing-Along Celebration Opens (2015)
On this day in 2015, For the First Time in Forever: A Frozen Sing-Along Celebration opened in Disneyland Paris.
The musical show based on the Disney animated film Frozen would run through January 2018.
Soarin’ Over California Returns (2019)
On this day in 2019, Soarin’ Over California returned to Disney California Adventure.
An opening day DCA attraction, Soarin Over California was later replaced by Soarin’ Around the World. The old version of the attraction would operate for the month of June.
