Pixar Has An ‘Elemental’ Problem
Pixar’s latest film Elemental got off to an auspicious start, when it was met with lukewarm reviews at the Cannes Film Festival.
Coming off the box-office failure of Lightyear, Disney has been counting on Elemental to turn the studio’s prospects back around.
If you needed proof that Pixar was counting on Elements, the film closed out Cannes last night, becoming only the second Pixar film to be granted that honor (Up closed out the 2009 festival).
The First Reviews Are In
Well if early reviews are any sign of what is to come, Disney may in fact have a Pixar problem on its hands. Not only was the film given a lukewarm five minute standing ovation (a formality more than anything else), but critical reviews for the film have been underwhelming to say the least.
Elemental currently holds a 57% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. If that number holds, the film would be Pixar’s second-lowest rated in history. The only film to score worse was Cars 2.
Critics have largely praised Elemental’s visuals and storytelling, while also deriding its script
The film tells the story of “Elemental City”, where fire, water, earth, and air elements live in reality harmony. Despite the obvious differences between them, a fire element named Ember and a water element named Wade fall in love.
Tracking Towards A Poor Opening
Poor critical reviews may not be the only forbidding sign for Elemental’s future.
Although the movie won’t hit theaters until June 16. The film is currently tracking towards a $40 million domestic. That would be a disastrous number for a project with a $200 million production budget.
Obviously, Disney has time to ramp up its marketing before Elemental hits theaters, and early tracking numbers often change. Nevertheless, Elemental is going to have to start trending in the right direction or Pixar may have its second box office bomb on their hands.
