May 27th was a massive day for Disney, with the release of a classic cartoon, the opening of two iconic attractions, and a new land for Disney’s Animal Kingdom! So, let’s get going!
Three Little Pigs Released (1933)
On this day in 1933, The Three Little Pigs was generally released.
Featuring the song “Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf”, the cartoon would be a smash hit.
Wynken, Blynken and Nod Released (1938)
On this day in 1938, the Silly Symphony Wynken, Blynken, and Nod was released.
Based on the popular children’s poem by Eugene Field, the cartoon was directed by Graham Heid.
Melody Time Released (1948)
On this day in 1948, Melody Time was released.
The package film was made up of multiple animate segments, Among the most popular were Johnny Appleseed and Pecos Bill.
Space Mountain Opens (1977)
On this day in 1977, a grand opening event was held for Disenyland’s Space Mountain.
On hand for the festivities were the six surviving astronauts from Project Mercury.
Ronald Reagan Has Innugaral Parade At EPCOT (1985)
On this day in 1985, President Ronald Reagan and Nancy Reagan visited EPCOT.
The President’s Second Inaugural Parade was held at the Disney park after the original Washington D.C. parade was canceled due to weather.
Sport Goofy In Soccermania Airs (1987)
On this day in 1987, the Disney cartoon Sport Goofy in Soccermania debuted.
Written by Joe Ranft and Tad Stones, the cartoon featured the debut of Russi Taylor as the voice of Huey, Dewey, and Louie.
Disney’s Sequoia Lodge Opens (1992)
On this day in 1992, Disney’s Sequoia Lodge opened in the Euro Disney Resort.
The resort was based on the American National Park lodges built around the turn of the 20th century. Located on Lake Disney, the hotel housed 1011 rooms.
Casey’s Corner Opens (1995)
On this day in 1995, Casey’s Corner opened on the Magic Kingdom’s Main Street USA.
The counter service restaurant had previously been known as the Coca-Cola Refreshment Corner.
Toy Story Funhouse Closes (1996)
On this day in 1996, Toy Story Funhouse closed in Disneyland.
The temporary attraction was originally part of Toy Story’s debut at the El Capitan Theatre in 1995.
Mickey’s Soundsational Parde Debuts (2011)
On this day in 2011, Mickey’s Soundsational Parade opened at Disneyland.
The nine-float precession debuted as part of Disney’s Soundsational Summer.
Alice Through The Looking Glass Released (2016)
On this day in 2016, Alice Through The Looking Glass was released.
A sequel to 2010’s Alice In Wonderland, the film starred Johnny Depp, Anne Hathaway, and Mia Wasikowska.
Frozen- Live at the Hyperion Opens (2016)
Also on this day in 2016, Frozen- Live at the Hyperion opened at Disney California Adventure.
The musical stage show based on the 2013 animated film Frozen, would run through March 2020.
Pandora- The World of Avatar Opens (2017)
On this day in 2017, Pandora- The World of Avatar opened to the public.
Disney’s Animal Kingdom’s newest land, The World of Avatar transports guests to the planet Pandora, where they can ride on a banshee on Avatar Flight of Passage, or cruise down a river on the Na’vi River Journey.
Guardians of the Galaxy- Mission: Breakout! Opens (2017)
Also on this day in 2017, Guardians of the Galaxy- Mission: Breakout! opened at Disney California Adventure.
Based on the popular Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, the attraction has Rocket Raccoon and guests attempting to free the remaining Guardians from the Collector’s fortress. The attraction used the same ride system as The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, which it replaced.
